In the early hours of Wednesday morning anti arms trade campaigners scaled
the fences of EDO MBM in Home Farm Road, Mouslecoomb, Brighton, superglued
the doors shut and locked themselves to the front entrances of the
factory. The action was to highlight EDO MBM's complicity in the
continuing civilian deaths in Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan.
Sarah Johnson, press spokesperson for the campaign, said 'In 2003 EDO
MBM's managing director told The Argus that he was proud of UK operations
in Iraq. Since then those operations have claimed the lives of over a
million people. Our campaign will not tolerate people profitting from
their deaths in our communtity'
EDO MBM, a wholly owned trading unit of US based EDO Corporation, supplies
weapons components to US and UK forces for use in Iraq and Afghanistan and
to the Israeli military for use in Palestine. Today's action is part of a
three and a half year year long campaign to shut down the Brighton arms
dealers which has included protest camps, weekly demonstrations, marches
and rooftop occupations. Since the campaign began several directors of EDO
MBM have resigned, the factory has consistently performed below targets,
EDO has reported over a million pounds spent on legal costs and EDO
Corporation now features in the Forbes top ten corparate losers lists.
