Loads of big meeting rooms at Skylight 66 Commercial Street E1

02.10.2006 15:49

I would just like to point out that not far from the LARC centre is a better place for meetings on Commercial Street a big community centre called Skylight at number 66. It has got several large rooms which would be ideal for things like meetings, public meetings and workshops. There is also an art workshop there wherer banners for events could be produced.

No offense intendended, but...

Skylight is not a community centre, it is a building run by Crisis, a massive homesless charity. While it ia true that it has the resources you describe, it is most unlikely that it could be used in the way that you describe for politically motivated campaigns.

The public meetings relating to the Sack Parliament event are often attended by police photographers. Do you really think that Crisis wouldn't immediatly give in to any pressure or even the hint of controversy and cancel such meetings?

Basically, LARC exists because years of experience using pubs and 'public' halls has led to people deciding we have to have our own spaces where we will not find our events cancel or refused by those who can't face the pressure. LARC is probably perfectly big enough for the meeting planned and if the organisers thought they needed somewhere bigger then they would have booked rampART which is also just down the road.

that's a really crap idea

Could you post the results of this meeting please?

I'd be very grateful if the people attending this meeting could post the results up here for the rest of us who are unable to attend for whatever reason. Thank you.

Ezekiel

No it is a good idea

No it is a good idea. The skylight building is meant to be a community centre even though it is run by a homeless charity. For a start the building gets funding from the local council Tower Hamlets. The whole point of setting up such a centre in the first place was intergrate homeless and ex homeless people into the community aswell as provide a much needed resource for a very deprived area of London - Whitechapel, which it has become. Finally anti-war is not political, people from all political and religous backgrounds are involved in the anti-war movment.
