An Island man involved in a pressure group for men's rights has expressed distress that MEP Caroline Lucas has declined to lend her personal support to his campaign because she feels that hundreds of years of Patriachal Society has resulted in the collective oppression of womem.
Paul Randle-Jolliffe, who lives in Ryde and is chairman designate of the South East region branch of men's civil rights group Mankind, said he found this comment very distressing and offensive.
"She is saying that she is not interested in men's issues and that is half of her electorate," Said Mr Randle-Jolliffe.
The remark was made by Ms Lucas and relayed by e-mail to Mr
Randle-Jolliffe by her assistant Cath Miller.
She was responding to a list of more than a dozen questions from Mr Randle-Jolliffe asking her views of Men's rights issues such as abuse and father's rights.
Ms Miller said the MEP felt other issues were more of a political and personal priority for her.
"Caroline and the Green Party takes issues of equality and domestic voilence very seriously and Green Party policy reflects this.
Carloline does not personally work on men's rights as she feels that hundreds of years of Patriachal Society has resulted in the collective oppression of womem and this is more of a political and personal priorirty for her than individual men being treated unfairly," said Ms Miller.
In a subsiquent email she added: "Carloine is a passionate advocate of equality and I am supprised that you should interpret my previous e-mail as indicative of an alternative point of view."
But Mr Randle-Jolliffe said the reply was highly sexist implying that his and other men's concerns were less important than other issues.
He said that Mankind's main areas of concern were to do with domestic violence against men, abuse and family matters and if there was a demand he would be prepared to setup a branch of Mankind on the Island.
