Vigil in solidarity with the victims of terror, in London and around the world. 6:00pm, Saturday 16 July, Southampton Peace Fountain.
A vigil is to be held this Saturday in solidarity with the victims of terror in London and around the world. The vigil, organised by the Southampton Stop the War group, will take place at 6:00 on Saturday 16 July at the Peace Fountain in St. Andrews Park.
This vigil will be one of many taking place all over the country. The aim is to show solidarity with the victims of the terrorist attack in London, and also with the victims of state terrorism in Iraq, Palestine and throughout the world. The following day, on Sunday 17 July, a national solidarity vigil will take place at 2:00 at Russell Square.
Last week, the Stop the War Coalition issued a statement which unequivocally condemned Thursday's terrorist attacks on the people of London: ''Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. There can be no justification for such attacks. We urge everyone to resist any attempts which may be made to use these crimes to stir up anti-Muslim hysteria or attack the Muslim population of this country. We emphasise the importance of solidarity, peace and justice as our guiding principles in addressing the crisis scarring the world today, of which the bombings are a dreadful manifestation. It is clearer than ever that the "war on terror" in which Britain has been so heavily involved has not, in fact, made the world safer from terrorism. Britain's security services warned Tony Blair two years ago that a war on Iraq would make such attacks more likely. That warning has now been tragically borne out in London.’’
It is hoped that the vigil will be used to show solidarity with the victims of all such terror, and to remind people that everyone is born equal, and that there is no difference between a life lost here and a life lost elsewhere.
