Led by a local samba band, trade justice activists marched through the centre of Southampton on Saturday to call for Poverty to be made History.
The protestors from Southampton Make Poverty history (1) marched from Asylum Green (at the bottom of the Avenue) to the Courts of Justice. This symbolises the role played by the legal system in providing a screen for immoral trading rules to be perpetuated. The march then snaked its way through town passing the Labour Party HQ, BBC South HQ, before breiefly stopping at the Civic Centre for a photo op. It continued into the centre of town, where it joined the Big White Band. Several campaigners had been collecting signatures on a banner in the centre of the town during the morning.
With the Big White Banner in tow, the march made its way down to Hoglands Park where an "unfair tug-of-war" took place, demonstrating the injustice of world trade rules. The banner is to be suspended from St Michael's Church throughout the Week of Action (2), and permission is being sought for more publicity in the near future.
