OXFORDSHIRE GROUP IN YEAR-LONG FASLANE NUCLEAR BLOCKADE.
A group of people from Oxfordshire and Berkshire are set to join a continuous blockade of Faslane naval submarine base in Scotland which is causing a whole year of disruption at the UK’s nuclear weapons base. They are the Oxfordshire Faslane 365 group.
The Oxfordshire connection is very strong with part of the group using ‘Alice in Wonderland’ as a guide to creating a ‘Malice in Blunderland’ theme to highlight the dangers of the nuclear warheads on the Trident missile weapons in the submarines.
Another local connection is that these Trident nuclear warheads are often transported through Oxfordshire in large armed convoys in very heavy traffic, on roads such as the A34 and M40.
About 40-50 people, mainly from Oxfordshire, together with colleagues from Berkshire are planning to take part in the blockade. They are backed and supported by Oxford CND, and Abingdon, Faringdon, Wallingford and Kidlington Peace Group members, as well as many other concerned individuals. Oxfordshire Faslane 365’s contribution will be to blockade the base for two days, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th March.
The group are aware that taking part may lead to arrests but have been preparing themselves with training workshops on non violence and how to cope with being detained by the police.
Nigel Day, from Oxfordshire Faslane 365 said: “The government now intends to develop new nuclear weapons of mass destruction to replace Trident at a cost of £76billion. This threatens us all, breaks our committed obligations under the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, encourages other countries to develop nuclear weapons, squanders resources, and means 50 more years of nuclear weapon warheads being transported through Oxfordshire next to our towns, homes, schools, hospitals, industries and farms. We have to protest, blockade, be a witness to this nuclear malice and work to banish it and replace it with peace, justice, respect and proper use of our resources.”
