Shell Disrupted & Protested Again in Reading

ShutShell | 11.11.2006 17:21 | Rossport Solidarity | Ecology | Repression | Social Struggles | London | Oxford

Inspired by last weeks action, and by the struggles of the people of Rossport and Niger, activists have again targetted Shell with protest and direct-action in Reading.

November 10th is the eleventh anniversary of the execution of Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogoni anti-Shell activists by the Nigerian state, for campaigning against the devastation of their home in the Niger Delta by oil companies Shell and Chevron.

Eleven years on, as the destruction and resistance continues in Niger, in Ireland we are witnessing the conflict between Shell and the peaceful residents of Rossport, Mayo where oil companies and the state aim to build a highly dangerous, experimental gas pipeline and refinery putting lives, homes, the environment and livelihoods at stake.

For these reasons, a day of action against Shell on 10th November was called for by Nigerian social movements and the Mayo based Shell-To-Sea campaign.

Inspired by last weeks action, activists have again targetted Shell with protest and direct-action in Reading. Overnight, pixies turned off the pumps at a Shell petrol station using the emergency shut-off switch on the wall of the shop, ready for the morning rushhour on 10th November. Later in the evening, 8 people held a protest outside the garage shop, opposite the pumps, giving out loads of leaflets and holding a banner demanding "S-HELL OUT OF IRELAND!"

The public were very sympathetic and supportive with many people urging us on. One lady from Ireland declared her support saying "That's (Shell exploiting Mayo) not allowed!" whilst another, who knew of the situation in Nigeria and the execution of the Ogoni 8, commended us for taking action.

We send our love and solidarity to all people fighting capitalism around the world in defense of our lives!

shell not entirely to blame at rossport

13.11.2006 11:46

I am not trying to say Shell is a good company or am i trying to defend it in its actions. However, Shell was not the original group who took over Rossport. By the time Shell were invovled the plans were already fucked and they were|and still are trying to get the hell out of the place, but the government has repeatedly pleaded with them to just to get the job over and done with. Shells hands appear to be tied and they are stuck in the area till they are finished. Also, it was good to see the actions taken against shell at its petrol stations, but this will not effect Shell at all. They are already making a loss on their petrol stations, so this is not the place to target them. Find out where they are making most profit and hit them hard. Or target the smaller companies that make Shell able to run. If you take out the beasts legs then it can no longer stand.

Worraload of crap and why are you being an apologist for multinationals with a record like theirs in Nigeria and elsewhere? Shell can pull out when ever they want; Shell can re-route the pipeline; Shell can carry out the processing at sea. Yea, it's a smaller profit for them, but not impossible and will not bankrupt the company.

unnecessary
