Brazilian Hip Hop comes to Oxford
In a very special one off performance, Brazilian rap troupe Zafrica
Brasil play their debut gig in Oxford at Cowley Road's Bullingdon Arms on August 24th.
All four of them have been involved in social action and community
projects in their hometown to keep youth out of trouble and away from the drugs and guns that infest their communities.
Zafrica's MC Gaspar - a founder member of Posse Conceitos de Rua - an important cultural activism group in Sao Paulo - says "We have
developed social projects in several peripheral communities, such as workshops on composition and rhyme, working with the basic elements of Hip Hop culture, with a special focus on ancestral heritage, regarding the roots of freedom in the search for self knowledge" .
Now they are on their second European tour, and are playing in Oxford at the request of local Hiphop act Big Speakers, who are also performing with them at the Bullingdon.
Featuring three very different vocal styles - combining Ragga, Samba and freestyle traditions to create eloquent social and political commentary with a deep sense of humour - they are a compelling live show.
Zafrica Brasil are touring the UK throughout August, and play the
Bullingdon Arms on Wednesday August 24th, price £5/4, supported by Oxford hiphoppers Big Speakers.
Their second album, "Take Courage" is released on the Ponto label in August.
