As I am sure you all aware, Oxford student Azim Ansari, who is in his first year reading engineering at St John's Colleges, faces deportation to Afghanistan along with his brother Wali, after their appeal for exceptional leave to remain failed. Azim's fate now lies with the Minister for Immigration, Des Browne, and the Home Secretary, Charles Clarke.
Oxford University Student Union and the "Keep Azim in Oxford" Campaign are organising what we hope will be a massive rally to demonstrate that Oxford students are united in solidarity with Azim and his brother. We believe that Azim deserves the right to remain in Oxford to complete his degree free from the fear of persecution.
We know that support for Azim in Oxford is overwhelming - both within Oxford University and the wider community. NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE THIS SUPPORT COUNT. A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION IS THE MOST EFFECTIVE FORM OF PUBLIC PROTEST IF PEOPLE CARE ENOUGH TO TURN UP.
We are appealing to anyone who supports the campaign against Azim's deportation - to give up just forty-five minutes of their lunch break this Saturday to show the Home Office and Minister that Azim's life matters to us!
Thank you so much for your support.
