Animal Rights Demo - Success Already!

Libraries close in preparation for animal rights demo

I am very pleased to inform you that Oxford University will close the Radcliffe Science Library, The Hooke Library, the Bodleian Library of Commonwealth and African Studies at Rhodes House, and the Vere Harmsworth Library (American Institute) on Saturday 4th December, due to our planned animal-rights demonstration in South Parks Road on that date.

where is the victory in closing libraries in Oxford

Where is the victory in Oxford University closing their libraries for the day because of your demo. Surely the victory that you are after is getting Oxford University to stop building their animal labs.

measures of success

30.11.2004 15:48

i'm not involved and dont live in oxford but i'd say that if the purpose of the demonstration is, in part, to cause distruption to the normal activities of the uni in order to demonstrate that things will be diffilcult for them if they continue on this path - then the fact that they are closing the libraries is an indication of success.

It is important not to only see success in the final attianment of an objective as there are steps that must be taken to reach any objective and each attempted step may be a success or a setback.

Pointless ....

Closing the libraries is in no way a success. It disrupts the lives of ordinary hard working students and is no skin off the university's back. The fact that they are closing them also shows that they are nervous about the behaviour of the protestors. This is far from a success as it shows the protestors as intimidating thugs.

In addition to this, simply because the new lab with better facilities is not being built, this does not mean that the experiments will not continue elsewhere, in poorer conditions and possibly overseas with less regulation.

creating opposition

Surely doing this will not affect the people involved with the animals, and only piss off students (particularly finalists) who might otherwise have supported you? Seems to me this will lose you support, and not gain you anything.

Where demo?

30.11.2004 20:56

When's this demo? Got a link? I can't understand why every student at oxford and every other scum uni doesn't stike until they stop these disgusting activities. I went to uni in the early 90's and met no one but twats - burn the place down!

get real

30.11.2004 23:20

It seems like the decision to close these libraries/quarters was not enforced by pressure from AR activists but a decision that has come from the university itself.

It's of no use at all sitting at your keyboards crying and pulling your hair out accusing AR folk of closing these quarters, it was the animal murderers and their scheming collaborators themselves who have decided to shut up shop.

Poor Oxford uni, they leave monkeys to die in agony after pointless experiments and then they complain when compassionate members of the human race come to show their disgust and rage at their 'pastimes'.

..So they should fucking lock themselves in.

Wouldn't you if you were committing these crimes?

Get real, Get some Compassion and then GET ANGRY!!!

Success?

01.12.2004 20:28

Given that the vast majority of students are heading home on Saturday and libraries are usually only open half a day on Saturday in the first place, does this really count as a success? Seems to me they're just worried about you trying to get in and hassling the staff...

stupid over-reaction

03.12.2004 13:16

Protestors woudl be barred from entering these building under the terms of the injunction (or at least those who have been served with it).

It is purely a university decision based on ignorance.

Shame

15.01.2005 02:19

Yes, well done. You managed to slightly mess with the structure that supports the intellectual elite for a short time :( It must suck to know that while you're sponging off the state in your poor-ass house my fellow Oxon grads and I will have lots of money and enjoy lots of nicely cooked meat.

Also, how does it feel to know that no matter how much you try millions of animals are always going to go though lots of pain for humans? You can't do anything about it :)
