21st Nov - on Saturday evening there was a very special event at East Oxford Community Centre to celebrate the life of a remarkable socialist, revolutionary and internationalist. Relatives and many of Oxfords socialists came together for this moving event while others sent their appreciations; some came from as far as Birmingham, all came to remember Basil with much affection. He had always been active politically, more recently in the Socialist Alliance and then with Respect. But it was his international perspective and his tireless work for the Troops Out of the North of Ireland campaign was particularly celebrated by some wonderful Irish music with Mick Henry singing inspiring songs and his friends also performing. People spoke movingly of how Basil’s constant work for these causes and his very gentle nature had constantly inspired them. It was so good to be able to celebrate the life of this real activist.
