On Saturday 22 May a protest was held in Cornmarket Street, Oxford, against the actions of the Israeli Defence Force in Rafah. Over the past week alone Rafah, a town in the Gaza strip, has seen incursions by Israeli forces that have led to dozens of civilian deaths and the bulldozing of hundreds of homes, leaving more than a thousand people homeless. The protest in Oxford was initially called by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, but, shocked by the scale of the humanitarian crisis the Oxford women’s group NOW (Network of Oxford Women for Justice and Peace) decided to come out on the street in support,to discuss the issue with passers-by and collect signatures for a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. You can see their beautiful hand-painted banner alongside the PSC one outside St Michael's Church.
