Cowley Road Carnival 2003 took place in Oxford on Sunday 15 June. The weather was perfect for the occasion, with blue skies and high temperatures so the dancers of Sol Samba were in no danger of catching a chill as they headed the procession which started from Manzil Way at 1.00pm.
The pavements by this time were so crowded with people determined to enjoy themselves that it was almost impossible to move, or take photos.
There was a full programme of music and dance throughout the day, on two stages in the Manzil Way area. Performances reflected the rich ethnic diversity of modern Britain, and Oxford in particular, with groups from Africa, Punjabi dancers from Southall, classical Indian dance, Chinese dragon dancers, as well as a wide variety of more traditionally British offerings. The Oxford University Museums also organised interesting activities for children such as puppet- and mask-making.
The photos are mainly of the procession, and more will be put up if people are interested.
