People around the proposed Minorca Opencast mine site are showing that they are fed up with waiting for a decision on whether to grant planning permission or not by signing up for a decision in their hundreds.
This means that pensioners Phil Owen and Bob Walsh will be carrying the hopes of many people when they do their trek to take this petition to Leicestershire County Hall on June 17th in time for a meeting of the Council’s Development Control and Regulatory Board meeting starting at 2 pm that afternoon.
Steve Leary, Spokesperson for The Minorca Opencast Protest Group (MOPG), who has been out canvassing roads in Measham near to the site said.
“There is no doubt that when you explain the situation to people they think we have waited long enough for this decision and that is why we have gained so many signatures. In addition, I also sense that as people are made aware of the possible consequences of having an opencast mine so near to where they live they are keen to join MOPG. So far over the last few weeks we have seen the largest number of new members join MOPG, over 20 so far, since August last year.”
