SPARROWS' NEST EVENT: 'Kropotkin's Mutual Aid today' - Sat 9th May 2009 at 3pm

The Sparrows' Nest | 06.05.2009 09:00 | Analysis | Culture | History | Sheffield

The Sparrows' Nest is pleased to announce a talk by Iain McKay, editor of The Anarchist FAQ, related to the new Freedom Press edition of Kropotkin's masterpiece Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution. Published in 1902, the book provided detailed evidence of cooperation at the heart of the natural world. Iain is visiting Nottingham to present the background and relevance today of Mutual Aid, to be followed by discussion. Date/Time: Saturday 9th May, 3.00pm

Kropotkin was a prominent russian anarchist in the late 19th early 20th century who popularised anarchist thought. His work remains essential reading today to all those with an interest in anarchist ideas and action.

"Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid is usually, and rightly, called his masterpiece. While the high quality of all his work makes it hard to say whether this classic can be considered his best, it is fair to say that it is probably his most famous and one of his most widely read. Suffice to say, that it is rarely out of print testifies to its importance as well as the quality and timelessness of its message".

This special events takes place at The Sparrows' Nest house, St Ann's, Nottingham on
Saturday 9th May 2009. The talk will begin at 3pm.

hi
this sounds great. but just reckon when posting on indymedia UK, you should put the location (city) in the title of the article, or at least really clearly at the beginning, rather than hidden down in the details at the bottom. People are reading this site from all over the country

?would you have said same if it was in London??

importance of kroptkin and reclus

07.05.2009 04:55

this is great, altho i will not be able to come. One of the things many people dont realise, even those who call themselves 'anarchists' is that many of the anarchist theorists had really great ideas, and were not 'utopian'. for example, regarding the ecological crisis, does not Kropotkin sound completely up to date? Kroptkin's views on so called 'primitive' peoples etc are also well thought out. i hope if the anarchist movement gets stronger, it ought to also become more intelligent and put forward more concrete plans for society. btw, i am particularly interested in the works of Elisee Reclus, who was a respected geographer as well as an anarchist. does anyone know anything about him, or have any links to his works? thanks.
