A reminder : the Highways Agency has published details of proposed widening to dual carriageway of the A453 (between M1 J24 and Clifton, basically). There are public exhibitions / consultations THIS WEEK - let's go along and comment on this road expansion.
The Highways Agency admits in it's "non-technical summary of the environmental statement" that CO2 emissions will be increased "slightly" by this scheme. Most of the road's other effects are categorised (by the roadbuilders themselves) as "neutral" or "slightly adverse" - but there will be benefits to lots of car travellers, so that's OK!
Exhibitions are in Kegworth on Wednesday 25/2/09, and Clifton on Fri 27 and Sat 28/2/09.

What's wrong with that ? Why do only pedestrians or cyclists deserve transport benefits ? Vehicle users pay BILLIONS into the pot and only a fraction of that is spent on roads.
As a driver - needed for work, unable to do job without a vehicle - I welcome this move to dual the 453. I just wish the powers that be would also address the atrocious standards of driving exhibited by a lot of commuter drivers who use this route and cause most of the mayhem.
Dualing this road, dropping in a few roundabouts and lining the route with SPECS cameras will hopefully reduce the frenetic use of that road, which will bring down emissions and reduce the number of accidents, deaths and serious injuries. That has to be a Good Thing.
Only people who do not drive will not benefit. So, lets raise a mob and, like, do something about it, yeah ?
If you must protest about transport and pollution issues, aim your ire at the school run mums.
At half term and on other school holidays, there is NO congestion. Journeys which usually take 40 minutes are completed in 15. Pollution and traffic accidents are vastly reduced, too, especially around schools.
Abolish the school run and you've cut congestion and inner city pollution by a good margin and everyone will be able to see and feel real benefits.
