Thursday 19th Feb - Rally for the right to play

Alice Sidwell | 11.02.2009 10:56 | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles

Next week's half term will see a plethora of activities for children, based in the Radford area - 2 days of creative workshops along the theme of reuse and recycle - followed by a Play parade, celebrating the re-development of Independent Street park and making noise about children’s right to play out safely. Information on volunteering opportunities in play will also be available.

Changes in today's society mean that there are now many barriers on children’s freedoms to play freely in their local neighborhoods, this is causing widespread ‘play
deprivation’ within many urban areas.
See article ‘generation of play deprivation’ BBC 2007.
 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7007378.stm.

This means that many children now lack the time, space and encouragements at home and school to create their own ‘child-powered’ fun. The Play Parade is a chance for children and families to speak out about access to safe places to play and children’s right to this.

In preparation there will be:
Creative workshops 11-3, Radford Primary School.
Tuesday 17th – Scrap instrument making/costumes/masks/sculpture
Wednesday 18th – Banner making/costumes/masks/sculpture
Free & Open to all, but please book an advance. Call Alice at Playworks 0115 958 9199

All of the creations will be use for the event below -

Play parade – ‘Rally for the right to play’
Thursday 19th February
Meet: 12pm Independent Street Park and parade to Radford Primary School.
Dressing up, face painting and making noise about children’s right to play out safely!
Bringing up the rear will be Nottingham’s very own electric vehicle, and a gathering of cyclists...what’s sometimes known as a critical mass!

Followed by:
Play day 1-3:30, Radford Primary School.
Games and Sports, art and craft, drumming, dance, circus skills, drama and more….
Ideas for play at home or out and about for parents
Information and ideas around volunteering in play and support with this will be available for parents.
Refreshments provided.

It would be great if parents came along and got involved in workshops. We would love any
Input or support from local people!
Please be aware that younger children will need supervision.
