Disillusioned kid | 22.04.2008 16:54 | Education | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements

According to Nottingham City Council's own estimates, Thursday's teachers' strike will close one third of the authority's schools.

In the run up to the strike by members of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday, the city council have released a list of schools (attached) which will be closed as a result of the industrial action. This suggests that 40 of the authorities 120 schools will be closed by the action, with a further 18 partially closed. County council information, indicates that schools there will be seriously impacted as well.

The decision to strike by teachers, follows a pay rise of 2.45%, well below the headline inflation rate of 4.1%. NUT members balloted on strike action voted more than three to one in favour. On a 32% turnout, 48,217 (75%) voted to strike with 15,884 (25%) voting against.

According to the Evening Post, the NUT has 4,000 members in the area administered by Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils, amounting to around a third of the teaching staff.
