NSPM: Climate Change Solutions Conference a Sucess

Alex | 14.02.2008 18:08 | Bio-technology | Climate Chaos | Technology | Sheffield

Despite the last minute cancellation of the centre for alternative technology as a key note speaker, Nottingham Student Peace Movement sucessfully hosted the first Annual Climate Change Solutions Conference at Nottingham University.

Over 40 people attended a day packed with speakers, workshops, vegan food, and discussion.

The aim of the conference was to seek for solutions to both the issues of Peak Oil and Climate Chaos. With world oil supplies in a crisis, it is the opinion of many that we have already passed, or are about to pass the peak in oil supplies. In addition to this the world is on the very brink of undeniable climate collapse. No longer can we fiddle with whether climate change is happening.

A video of the event can be found here:

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Rst91RLqWk

The day was opened with three speakers:

Jerrome Baddely, Nottingham energy partnership: "Climate Change and Peak Oil: Twin Crises"

Outlining the problems faced, Jerrome suggested alternatives, citing the example of Transistion towns in the UK as one potential solution.

Paddy Gillet, Plane Stupid: "Direct Ation: What and Why?"

A presentation covering why direct action is logical and effective, providing a brief history of plane stupid's actions and their effect.

Dr. Gareth Oakley: "An Introduction To Sustainable Development"

Covering eco-houses, straw bale development, wind turbines, recycling and how to construct sustainable communities.

Workshops included:
Peak Oil: Coping in Nottingham
Jerrome Baddley

Direct Action & Aviation
Plane Stupid & Eastside Climate Action

Food and the Environment
Rob Jackson, The Vegan Society

On and Offshore Wind – Facts & Myths
Jon Beresford

Why non-violent protest?
Jane Burd, Nottingham Greenpeace

Food was provided by the ever-reliable Veggies.

Thanks to all who spoke and attended, we hope to see you next year!

Nice report

Nice report NSPM. Perhaps you can upload your video to Indymedia too, so we don't have to rely on corporate sites such as YouTube. I realise that the process is a bit hard to understand at the moment, but that's something that the network is working on improving.

Yeah, I tried to

15.02.2008 19:33

but the FTP system was beyond me and I didnt have the time until next week to work out how the heck it worked. I'm something of a technophobe at heart.

Soon however, we will all be trained....
