Hyson Green / Radford Community Wall Mural

'The Community Artmakers'

Passin' through Hyson Green this afternoon, came across Richard [popx] just finishing a 100' piece on boards in front of the New Arts Exchange in Hyson Green [Gregory Boulevard]. Some local dignataries acknowledged the completion of the work.

He had won a competition to paint the design. There had been previous artwork in front of the building before. In time, they have an idea to do yet another piece before the building is finished.

There have been a number of 'public art' pieces in Hyson Green and Radford, with a view to expressing the local cultural diversities of the area. Also, to simply add some colour to the inner city.

At this time of the year, the sun will be at a low raking light over the artwork, at about 3 - 4pm. Especially on a sunny day, I think you should go and look it over. Vibrancy of the colours are best seen then ..... and why I descided to do these pictures of it at this time.

I am honoured that he said that he had looked at some of the following posts on Nottingham Indymedia, of the Afro-Caribbean Carnival and the Asian Mela, and based some of the characters in his artwork, of some of my photos of these events. I to am trying to hold-up the diverse culture of our communities here.

Nice one ...... cheers.

Three Beautiful Oil Paintings? Richard, will you do it?

23.10.2007 19:20

This is lovely. The time and attention given by the artist to detail (as well as passers by) was phenomenal.

But does it have to end there?

Will this work be lost when the new theme is decided?

Couldn't this mural be 'Work in Progress?'....

like, the community version of a more enduring work?

Three large oil paintings that magnify a detail of the mural for the first exhibition in the New Art Exchange?

What do you think?

Nottingham needs to give artists more support to show what they're really capable of.

I think it's good that this artist has produced the community mural but I bet that he could do with support that would help him make paintings tha would sit just as comfortably in the Castle, the New Art Exchange or the new Centre for Contemporary Art...
