The Sumac Centre in Forest Fields recently reopened after it was closed for a few weeks during which volunteers redecorated the place and managed to get their hands on some much needed maintenance work. Local photographer Alan Lodge visited the centre last week to find out what all the fuss is about...

the changes look great. i really like the new mural and sign, the garden looks great, and parasols,
very nice indeed. but you still have that old carpet and sofas in the main room that have that care home kind of vibe. oh, and sorry to be rude but the outside noticeboard looks a bit candy-assed too.

if social centres are going to work as places for outreach and turning newcomers onto these politics then we need to make them really swish and inviting. otherwise they'll just be like a workingmen's club for a few mates.

seems from the pictures that youve kind of half done this but then got scared.

sorry to be an arse.

Well, I think we agree. The new furniture we got in has come from an old pub, which was closing down. We're getting new fabrics for the upholstering, but it would be great if more folk came in to help out with that. Otherwise, we'll just have to do with the 'care home kind of vibe' furniture for a bit longer until a volunteer is found. On the other hand, I think your point about the 'old carpet' is a bit misplaced really. Why should we get rid of a carpet if it is doing the job alright? The reason why pubs have this sort of dark coloured carpets is that people can spill drinks on them. So it's very practical, and with the revamp looks fine imho.

The Sumac Centre has always made an effort to be a welcoming and inclusive place to draw new people in. The Sumac is what WE make it. Together. We have been asking people to help look at the revamp plans for ages, share ideas, order paints and come in to do the job. Sounds like the The Social Centre Fashion Police has had some thought on this. See you at the meeting next Monday?
