Floods around Nottingham : Trent and the Soar
On my tour of the affected areas around the city ..... I started through Chilwell, Beeston and Long Eaton, and on the River Trent, to Trent Lock. Then, down the River Soar into Leicestershire and the area between the Sawley Marina and the M1 motorway. Back along the Trent to Attenborough and the reserve there.
Back then through Nottingham and checked on the east side of the city, through Burton Joyce and Lowdenham. More rain is expected tonight.
Watching the mainstream media ..... they wont say if this is further evidence of climate change ...... or not!
Well, is it global warming, or what? Some of us suspect it might be.
Now, even the Prime Minister [Tony Blair, that is, still] said this morning, that he thought the floods were related to such major global issues, and that we should beware.
"Speaking at a joint press conference with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, Tony Blair said that scientific objections to climate change were "falling away" and that there was a "consensus" on the need for action."
"Pointing to the recent G8 summit in Germany, the PM also said that the US commitment to a new global deal on reducing greenhouse gas emissions marked a major step forward. The next challenge was to bring on board developing nations such as India and China he said.
"The important thing out of G8 was that for the first time we agreed that we need a stabilisation goal, we agreed that we need a new international deal...and we agreed on a process for getting it done.
"[Today's flooding] is not the first time over the past few years we have been subject to quite unusual and extraordinary weather variations and its yet another reason why it's important we take this issue seriously."

The Environment Agency agreed saying: "The Environment Agency says global warming means we face extreme floods more regularly in the future."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6240594.stm It was worse outside our area though. Four people have died and thousands have been forced from their homes after severe flooding hit Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Wales yesterday.
The Environment Agency has labelled the conditions "phenomenal" and said a sixth of the annual rain had fallen in some places in 12 hours.
Here in Nottinghamshire the rainfall statistic is 145mm or just over 5in in 24 hours
Another bucketful, is expected before, and over the weekend.

Spring into Action was a week of action on climate change

Spring into Action was a week of workshops, events, music and action on climate change happening at different venues across Nottingham. It was expected that within this period, people would be able to turn up, and get involved in helping build the project.
A week of workshops, events, music and action on climate change happening at different venues across Nottingham.
Climate change is real and its happening now. Governments and corporations dream of continued economic growth - economic growth can't solve this crisis, but we can. A massive and concerted effort is needed on the scale of 'Dig for Victory' or the 'Home Front': A war on climate change.
We can't continue our current way of life - the oil on which it all depends is running out too fast. A shift to a locally based economy will have to happen, with food and energy being produced by the people that use it. The only question is when? We could start now, or we could wait for a future of war, famine, hurricanes, droughts and floods.
We need to gain the courage and change fast enough to cultivate a new world, before it's too late.
'Spring into Action' is part of an emerging grassroots movement against climate change. Born out of the Camp for Climate Action (www.climatecamp.org.uk), 'Spring into Action'unites people across the east of England into making changes in our own lives, creating small scale solutions in our communities and resisting those who still seek their own short term gain over a safe future for us all.
So get involved, and help organise the change that you want to experience in our world.

nice pictures, just to say I was at Attenborough all day yesterday and the water level went up by over a foot during the course of the day, even though there was no more rainfall.

It is time the Pavement technology centre designed and legislated for roofs, car-parks, and decking with gaps that allows plants to grow beneath, thus absorbing the water like a sponge. Most houses have illegal gutters that go into the drains. It is time we separated our different wastes and run-offs to make best use of them. We should refine and market the nation's sewage for fuels, fertilisers, and so on. Let's use rainwater in the garden or for flushing. Why not use rainwater for condenser cooling and and hot water? Australia regularly gets 6 inches of rain in a matter of hours.

Floods have been happening from time immemorial. What has changed is we have been mollycoddled by the media into ignoring our own history and our own culture.
The mainstream media don't talk about the real dangers such as a stock market crash or takeover of our government by organisd criminals and the neoconservative Nazis.
