As part of Spring Into Action I went along to a small workshop on website design. Nowadays one needs to make an effort to look good online and Spring Into Action has done a pretty damn good job of that with their website. See:

Anyway, the workshop went through some of the basics in webdesign. One of the main messages of it was: forget your Dreamweaver and Frontpage, webpage editor programs. This was about starting from scratch, with a simple text editor and some simple html coding. The attached printout gives an overview of where to start and some references for further reading. I made a site recently with some simple html code. Just plain and simple, but it does the job! And especially for campaign groups this is key. That your site works well first and you worry about its looks later.
So get yourself a text editor, write some html (some ideas in the print out) and save it as .html format. Then, open the file in your browser by typing the file destination in the adressbar. For example: C://Desktop/mysite.html or /home/mycomputer/mysite.html
Anyway, when the browser opens your page, thats when you've made your first website. It's really not that hard! Then later you can worry about uploading it somewhere and getting it online. Some grassroots tech and hosting collectives that can help you with that are:
