To mark the opening of the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice at Nottingham University we are hosting a lecture by one of the best known critical intellectuals in the world: Distinguished Professor David Harvey who will speak on 'Social Justice and the City'.
The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice was created this year to provide a space for thought and reflection on the nature of justice in the contemporary world. As regular readers of Indymedia will know we have hosted a variety of events this year, including seminars with well known activists such as Michael Albert and Andy Dobson and workshops on a variety of issues such as Ethical Internationalism in HE.
To mark the opening of the Centre we are delighted to host to Prof David Harvey, one of the best known critical theorists in the world and author of works such as The Limits of Capital; the Condition of Postmodernity and Spaces of Hope. More details on Harvey can be found here:

His talk which is entitled 'Social Justice and the City' takes place in Lecture Theatre B63 of the Law and Social Sciences Building on the main campus of Nottingham University from 5-6.15pm on THURSDAY 7th December. this is followed by a reception open to all in the main foyer.
There is great interest in this event, so to avoid disappoinment please email us letting us know you are coming so we can reserve you a place - otherwise places are first come first served.
This is a genuinely OPEN event - You do not need an affiliation or connection to the University - everyone is welcome to attend!

I think you'll find that everyone in the country has a connection with Sheffield University. It is a publically funded university. The public own it. Its staff are merely those that sell their labour to us.

1. the talk is at Nottingham not sheffield
2. whilst a great deal of public money goes to university this alone does not make them or their activities 'open'. ever tried walking through lab space, medical schools, libraries with closed access, staff facilities etc etc?
3. most academic seminar series are not open to everyone - one has to be a member of the University this is not the case here - unusually for a university event.
4. don't confuse 'public money' with public ownership - universities are formally autonomous institutions that are not under direct state control.
5. University staff are not 'owned' by you. They are employed by universities and many such staff would be more accurately described as 'owned'(or employed) by a range of funders in the private as well as public sphere.
