Nottingham Squatting Project, The Tidy-Up :: The pictures

Tash [alan lodge] | 22.08.2005 22:16

A building empty for many years has been occupied. The neighbours constantly fed up with the council inaction, a mess in the garden, drug abusers round the back of the property, windows smashed. Not something you would like to live next door to. Thus, the group has much community support, and now they're secure in their new home, there is much tidying up to do and this has already begun.

Nottingham Squatting Project, The Tidy-Up :: The pictures

A building empty for many years has been occupied. The neighbours constantly fed up with the council inaction, a mess in the garden, drug abusers round the back of the property, windows smashed. Not something you would like to live next door to. Thus, the group has much community support, and now they're secure in their new home, there is much tidying up to do and this has already begun.

10 days ago, these folks squatted a building that had been empty for seven years.

Over the last week, they had a tidy of the rubbish out of the garden, shooo'd away the drug abusers out of the yard, painted out the grafitti, got rid of the needles found around and about. Started fixing aspects of the house, both for security, and to make the house more comfortable.

And the City Councils response. A Notice to Quit, served on friday afternoon.

So, advice is being sought, a petition is being organised, already signed by many local residence who remember what the place has looked like before the squatters moved in.

But anyway, life goes on ......

On sunday 21st August, the house continue to make improvements. Rubbish having been cleared up, a some community gardening was being laid on for many of us, who wanted to help.

Ideas and plant donations continue to be most welcome.

Despicable attitude

23.08.2005 11:43

Notts County Council's attitude seems despicable. They give no valid reason as to why they wish you to leave. Perhaps they are afraid of having their negligent housing policy (owning an empty property for 7 years) highlighted.

Has anyone spoken to them regarding their reasons?

steve

nice one for squatting council property and good luck with the project. It's really worth exploiting the fact at every opportunity that it's been left to rot by a negligent council and use the mainstream media as much as you can to highlight this. Developing a media strategy was an essential part of our resistance at the Nursery Social Centre in Birmingham.

If they persist in trying to evict you just RESIST - I'm sure you'll get plenty of help :)

Chris, there were local people involved with the nursery in brum early on and during the eviction attempts - if you'd have come more often you might have even met them! In fact if you had come more often you could have got involved with getting more people involved.

Granted it has to be said that many people were put off using the space later on because of the inevitable cross-over of the resident's lives upstairs into the space downstairs in the social centre. It might be worth bearing in mind some of these issues if you want to mix residential squatting with a social centre.

keep up the community direct action :)
