Anti-fascism on the terraces

Freedom Press | 23.12.2011 01:09 | Anti-racism | Other Press | Liverpool

Tranmere Rovers has always been the neglected kid brother on Merseyside, hidden beneath the shadow of the eternal Liverpool/Everton football rivalry.

With neither the big money nor the big gates to propel them into premiership star status Rovers have never really competed with the glory hunters, but what they lack in big names they make up for in a big personality and a lot of local passion. The fans are some of the most committed for a lower league club and The Kop can be a boisterous and intimidating place for away teams and their supporters.

Rovers also have some pretty impressive cultural associations. Cult indie band Half Man Half Biscuit famously turned down a live appearance on national TV to see Tranmere play, and the book Awaydays by Kevin Sampson (which was recently made into a feature film) was based on Tranmere’s hooligan firm of the early 1980s.

The fans set up a Supporters Trust which has just reached its initial goal of raising £100,000 in its ambition to take the club into community ownership. Supporters Trusts are directly democratic, not-for-profit organisations where fans have a formal say in running the club, and ultimately take them over as fan owned and controlled.

But perhaps the most interesting of recent developments on the terraces of Prenton Park has been the formation of Tranmere Rovers Anti-fascists (TRAF). With their mighty 12ft high banner declaring working class unity, TRAF have been promoting anti-fascism in the local area as a response to the increased presence of the EDL at home games. They have already had a mass leafleting campaign outside the ground and been involved in joint actions with other anti-fascist groups, including joining anarchists in Liverpool to counter the BNP’s protest against Question Time being recorded in the city.

TRAF politics are clear: “We are a cross section of Tranmere fans, concerned at the rise of the extreme right wing. History tells us that when we stand together we can achieve anything as a community, as a society, as a class and as a people. History also teaches us that the rich and ruling class are the only beneficiaries of our class divided. We stand vehemently opposed to all forms of racism, fascism, sectarianism and discrimination” which impressed Billy Bragg enough to sport one of their t-shirts during his set at this year’s Tolpuddle festival.

Great stuff indeed

Great to hear about this, but Freedom really ought to know better than to be name-checking a wanker like Billy Bragg.

Football ?

The ultimate opium of the masses, more corrosive than religion.

Encouraging the working classes to "support" one team over another, display their tribal loyalties to keep them docile and under the bosses control.

WAKE UP !!!!

growth of fan run and anti fascist football

there is an encouraging growth in fan owned, working class and anti fascist clubs in the UK

see for example FC United of Manchester.

Anti fascists at football? LMFAO! Good luck with that. Only two teams have ever had a sizeable far left following and that's Celtic and Man U. Try Millwall, Chelsea, Charlton, Burnley, Portsmouth, Oldham, Stoke, Leeds, Villa or Rangers and see how far they get. Football lads have always been patriotic and loyalist.

Anti-fuckwittery.

"Football lads have always been patriotic and loyalist."

No they haven't.

They have always been brain dead fucking stoopid is what you mean.

Takes courage to be anti-nationalist.

Takes fuck all to piss your life away in a football stadium.

Some of the most embarrasing sights I have ever seen, were football hooligans trying to fight each each. Lots of windmill punches, aimless kicking the air, running away and general drunken embarrassment all round. Fucking hopeless and extrememly pathetic.

What you call patriotism and loyalism is just talk. You wouldn't stand up in a real man's fight.

Do yourself a favour and fuck off back to school, silly boy.

Smiffy.

Better than hunting foxes

Football need not be a vehicle for tribalism, violence etc.... but it often is.
I can imagine more supporters getting involved with running their clubs, rather than just being customers. This is surely a good thing.
I love to play football, and i love to watch the best players in the world play.
A true football fan wants to see a beautiful game.
But I think many people who consider themselves football fans are not.
They are using it as a way to express their frustrations..... or maybe they are being distracted from their frustrations.
anyway its not just men who like football so it cant just be about penises.....
whichever way i look at it i cant help but think its better than hunting foxes.
