In May 2006 a protest camp that in the town square of Oaxaca, a mainly indigenous Mexican city, in support of a teachers’ strike was violently evicted by the police. The people of Oaxaca returned to the square and occupied it until November. They formed a peoples’ assembly (APPO) and fought back. Police have killed more than 30 people, and tortured, sexually assaulted and detained many more, but the resistance continues.
