After a week of speculation, one thousand Vauxhall car workers at Ellesmere Port today learned their jobs were being axed.
At 10am it was announced that nine hundred manufacturing jobs will go, alongside one hundred office jobs. Chancellor Gordon Brown and Trade Security Alistair Darling then turned up to 'stress their support', but the reality is there is next to nothing they or any western government can do to stop employers relocating overseas to find cheaper workers. This is an issue that should unite the working class worldwide in a struggle against poverty pay and poor conditions.
Arriving for the day shift today, John Atherton, 42, from Wallasey, said: "I've got three kids and my wife is pregnant.
"If I lost my job I would lose my home. We are disappointed and depressed because we have bent over backwards and worked really hard to improve quality and production and this is what we get."
