One was to show distain at the forthcoming visit to Liverpool of America’s most vocal neo-con warmonger Condoleezza Rice. The second was to protest at the cuts in funding that the city council is making to youth services.
The money being spent entertaining Rice and her entourage - which will undoubtedly include armed CIA agents, would be far better spent providing facilities for the youth of our city.
Of course this is not just a local concern. Countrywide, we are seeing crisis after crisis in pensions, the NHS, care for the elderly, education, transport, fuel & energy and local services, where much needed investment is being curtailed to fund the illegal and immoral wars in the middle east.
As both events were advertised in the local press, surely one big demo could have had more impact. The UNISON banner to me says it all: ‘unity is strength’.
So let’s get together and create a united front. Wars cost money. Your money!
Well done to all those who did turn out for their particular cause. I hope to see lots of you at the Stop The War Don’t Attack Iran demonstration in London on March 18th.
