VIGIL

Peter Buknatski | 21.03.2005 18:49 | Analysis | Repression | Liverpool | London

Poem about American liberal Yuppies vigiling for Peace while their lifestyles are causing the wars and injustices (and Bush administrations) that are destroying the World.
This is from Vermont--The Vigi State, Home of the TRULY Ugly American.

VIGIL

I stand with a sign
For an hour each week
It makes me feel good
I deserve to feel good
I am a good person
Sometimes

After I am done
I go to the library
I take home all the right books
It makes me feel good
It eases my stress

I am a moral witness
I will not tell you
What I think or feel
Except that I feel good
Sometimes

I am not responsible
It is not me
It is them
Please don't touch me
It causes me stress

I will not listen to you
I will not talk to you
I have seen the dead
I have my sign

I am a moral witness
Silence makes me feel good
Silence is my weapon
Sometimes

Note: When you run into an American tourist from Vermont on one of their pig-outings--cause them STRESS. Thank you.

Why so Peter?

I don't agree with your point, Peter, because cause and responsibility are not the same.
You assume they are. And if you assume this is the case most of us are damned.

Using your arguments, if you are trying to stop them, Peter, and have a live a 'pure' lifestyle, you are probably not trying hard enough; so you too are responsible by your own logic, in that you could do more to stop wars. Additionally, few live outside the domains of capitalism and mortal conflict; and most of them, either directly or indirectly, live war-supporting 'lifestyles'.

So using your augments we are all like these war-supporting Yuppies. But we are not. And in fact they are not conscious supporters of war either. They are trying to do some good under the constraints of the system that has them in chains, albeit soft comfortable chains.

We are all in chains really but we can sing in our chains, like the big blue sea, like the blues singers sang in their chains and achieved freedom, but only the freedom to be oppressed like everyone else was a possibility, and not even a possibility for so many souls.

The sea, if it sings loud enough all over and everywhere, shall rise up and sweep all over all the land, to break through all the chains that have held it back , and recede to reveal a new world cleansed of all the suffering, violence, brutality, suffering and subjugation. But we must build our fleets arks to withstand the mightiest of forces, with great care, patience, cunning and secrecy, and let the sea chase the oppressors, naked, up their castles and palaces in the highest mountains and volcanoes - where they will be cold, hungry, naked, and imprisoned, until they see the light

Silence in the face of evil is accomodation and collaboration. But thank you for the 'Inner Peace' take--that's part of what's wrong now. VICTORY TO THE IRAQI FORCES!
(See...I don't believe in Peace AT ALL.)
