sainsburys distribution depot blocked 30.9.04

Lord Sainsbury | 30.09.2004 01:20 | Bio-technology | Liverpool

GM blockade of Sainsburys depot Merseyside tonight

The last nationwide blockade of Sainsburys distribution depots cost them a fortune. In the early hours of this morning in St Helens Merseyside we've done it again.

more news to follow.

Press release

SAINSBURY’S DEPOT BROUGHT TO A STAND STILL AGAIN BY GM PROTESTERS

One of Sainsbury's biggest UK distribution centres has been shut down tonight as part of a concentrated campaign to stop Sainsbury's selling milk from cows fed on GM products.
People are chained together through steel tubes, blocking the depot gates.

This action is blocking entrances normally used to distribute the supermarket’s dairy products that come from cows fed GM animal feed. The protest follows Sainsbury’s failure to provide non-GM fed milk as standard, despite rivals like Marks and Spencer and the Co-op doing so.

A protester explained:
“Neither farmers or consumers want GM in our food chain. Sainsbury’s must keep their promise to phase out its use, and pay farmers properly so they can do so”

A farmer added:
“We are paid less for our milk than it costs to produce. GM is only adding to the crisis in our industry. We want an end to the exploitation of foreign farmers through GM, and an end to the exploitation of us by the supermarkets.”

The protesters intend to stay until GM fed products are taken off Sainsbury’s shelves. The police have been called but any arrests are likely to be seriously delayed by the demonstrator’s chains and equipment.

NOTES TO EDITORS

GM fed milk is currently unlabelled. The effects of GM on both cattle, and the people who then eat products from them, have never been tested by independent scientists.
In the face of public concern Sainsbury’s pledged to phase out the use of GM in animal feed three years ago, but are now claiming they cannot for economic reasons.
Prof. Bob Orskov OBE, director of the International Feed Resource Unit in Aberdeen has said “As a scientist, I wouldn’t drink milk from cows fed GM with the current state of knowledge”.

Yay, Again! We've been telling the folks of New Zealand about the last Sainsbury's blockade while showing people how to use arm tubes, tripods and stuff in workshops in about 35 towns&cities. Its a great example of this type of DA used against GM involving farmers. (Hopefully will inspire some Kiwis to the same with our simmilar GE feed campagin against inghams www.getinghams.com)

Hope it went well, the mersy cops were not to grim and there were no arrests..

pictures please!

OK, so I know this is really a space for fresh and insightful comment, but goddamit- hurray.

This is a thing to induce great happiness in the hearts of many. Thank you from the very bottom of my previously paranoia racked boots. This stuff is definately hurting them badly, given the expense of the opperation which was mounted to stop the last lot of blockade attempts. Just goes to show what can be done even when they're trying to pay attention. Bloody fantastic and other inadiquate superlatives.

I'm just off to jump round the kitchen singing 'oh what a beautiful morning'. Don't mind me.

well done all involved! let's keep the buggers guessing, eh? the first nationally co-ordinated action went like clockwork, the second was rumbled? The only way to catch them on the hop is to do it random, do it without any digital/phone communication, do it decentralised!!!! Let's see those depots buggered at random, til Sainsbury's either capitulate or hire a private army....

Aharrr shipmates!!

Great news - any updates?

Great news - well done, everyone.
Any further information? How long did the team stay there for? Were they cut out? Any arrests?

update

30.09.2004 14:23

Update

The blockade succeeded in stopping lorries coming in or out of the depot for three and a half hours.
There were no arrests and the only equipment lost was a lock used to shut the emergency gate.
The blockade ended when police cut the lock on the emergency gate to allow lorries out that way.
The emergency gate has never been used before when this depot was blockaded as part of the national blockade recently or when it has been blockaded by farmers and striking sainsbury’s workers on previous occasions.

I will post a fuller report later this afternoon as a new newswire article with links.
There are also still photos to follow.

If an IMC admin thinks its worthy and has the time , could this be made into a main feature once i've writtena thorough update?
cheers

Putting the "direct" back into DA

Cracking news, I hope you're all getting a great warm feeling inside. Sainsbury's are starting to get very upset by the constant bombardment of bad publicity so keep it up chaps!

It's important to know that in the face of the corporate machine there are more and more people refusing to go along with the script. So, thanks!

Good luck in court to the London/Essex brigade!

Get Real.

08.10.2004 08:52

Brought the depot to a halt.....Get real! The management knew you were coming and had enough trailers on site so as to not effect the operation. Because of this the depot got in front! When things were getting critical you all buggered off!! What was the problem? Run out of drugs? Try using people who are running the show not to be blatenly stoned out of their brains, however nice their tits are.

You caused at best, a lot of journeys to start late, but nothing arrived too late in store to make any difference whatso ever.

In summary the depot had a better than average night....and this was all down to you!

OOH ERR!

13.10.2004 20:05

I was on that action and I'm not sure what sort of drug crazed orgy YOU saw but no one was stoned and no one had their tits out. That GM milk must be sending you a bit crazy me dear! As for not affecting Sainsburys, your lorry drivers didn't share your delusions and asked us to come back to screw over the company that is screwing them over.
