We are planning to hold a “Sleep Out in Solidarity” on or around November 1st to highlight the plight of asylum seekers left homeless and starving, either because their application for asylum has failed, but their country of origin is too dangerous to deport them to, or because the Home Office does not accept that they made their claim at the first opportunity (Section 55 of the Immigration and Nationality Act)
We intend to get as many people as possible to spend twenty-four hours on the street in the city centre. Some of those people will be on a 24 hour fast, some people will meditate, some will sing, hold candles, give out leaflets, whatever meaningful, quiet and peaceful actions we can come up with. We will need lots of people to make it safe.
We believe that we could really make much more of an impact if there were similar simultaneous actions all over the country. We don’t have an awful lot of time to get this organised because the weather is getting colder and we need to put a spotlight on this now if we are to prick the conscience of the government and the people of the UK in time for something to be done this winter.
