SOUTHPORT Zoo is facing extinction.Pleasureland, the funfair next door, are planning to demolish the animal houses to build a new ride. The family-run zoo, which was rebuilt in 1969, looks certain to be knocked down if the plans get the go-ahead.This would mean owners Carol and Doug Petrie would have to find new homes for all their animals including a lion, chimpanzees and wild cats such as the endangered snow leopard.Carol said she was shocked by the news and would be fighting the application."All I can say at the moment is that our legal advisors are dealing with the matter as we speak."Pleasureland, which is based next-door to the zoo in Princes Park, recently won the lease on the zoo's land from Sefton council. They plan to build a mystery new attraction which will create 50 new jobs.A spokesman for Pleasureland said: "We have recently concluded negotiations with Sefton council for the acquisition of an area of land."Pleasureland's aim is to continually improve its product and levels of service and these improvements will include new attractions over coming years, ensuring it retains its place as one of the UK's top amusement parks."The news will be welcomed by animal rights campaigners, who have demonstrated regularly outside the attraction, calling for it to be closed down.A council spokesperson added: "We can confirm that we have received an application by Pleasureland Ltd and that will go before a planning committee."Brighton-based surveyors Stiles Harold Williams are acting on behalf of Pleasureland Ltd over the application. Its about time this monstrous shit hole was closed, anyone who visited there even as a kid – would have been shocked by the tiny inhumane conditions the animals were living in.
