Luke Smith - An unpleasant little thug
Luke Smith, former BNP councillor, and one of the most vicious little bastards Burnley has seen has killed himself. Smith was expelled from the BNP after smashing a bottle into the face of BNP Insecurity chief Martin Reynolds, and has rarely been out of bother since. He was jailed for 17 months in March 2006 for violent disorder, and at the time of his suicide was awaiting sentencing for assaulting the landlord of a Burnley pub. Smith chose to take his life next to the Balti King takeaway in Yorkshire Street, Burnley, somewhere which is certain to become a favourite spot for local anti-fascists to hang out.

This is not what deters people from becoming involved with "afa" (an organisation which has not actually existed for some years now. Some people can always think of excuses to do nothing. The world is a better place without Luke Smith, and it would be an even better place without every other one.

FIVE football hooligans from Burnley have been caged after going on the rampage in Manchester at a World Cup qualifying match. All will miss the World Cup in Germany.Smith was jailed for 11 months for violent disorder, and a further six for an incident in Blackpool; Tempest for ten months for the Manchester violence and six for the Blackpool incident and Jonathan Kearney eight months for Manchester and four for Blackpool.The Manchester violence happened during four main incidents, one on Deansgate, one at the Mitre Bar on Cathedral Gates, one on Market Street and one at Dry Bar on Oldham Street the last involving the Burnley fans.At 5pm, around 24 men were on Oldham Street in Manchester when they started to attack another group of men at Dry Bar.The terrifying attack went on for a number of minutes and involved the offenders throwing items including chairs into the bar where women and children were sitting.In the Blackpool violence, gas engineer and ex-British National Party man Luke Smith, 24, was among a group who travelled to the seaside resort on May 22 last year.Preston Crown Court heard last year a fight broke out at Finn's Bar between Smith's friends and other drinkers.Smith, Daniel Tempest, 22, and Jonathan Kearney, 20, were arrested after being captured on CCTV.Smith, Kearney and Tempest all pleaded guilty to affray at the bar and Tempest to another charge of affray at the Railway pub, Preston, on the same day but were not sentenced until after the completion of the Manchester case.A prosecution team of GMP officers, CPS lawyers and case workers spent six months reviewing CCTV from Manchester city centre.Football intelligence officers from seven other forces, including Lancashire, helped to identify the people who were involved in the disorder.A spokesman for Lancashire police, whose Fixture team was set up to combat hooliganism and investigate the Blackpool incident, said: "Hopefully these sentences will send out a strong message to anyone thinking of getting involved in football-related disorder that it will not be tolerated."This group have been a thorn in our side for some time and have been continually causing disorder in the town centre on match days and we will not stand for it."Greater Manchester Police's Assistant Chief Constable, Stephen Thomas, added: "There are only a small number of individuals who are responsible for spoiling the reputation of our English football fans and by taking action against them we hope to reassure the vast majority of real football supporters that it is safe to attend matches."The majority of these individuals have been issued with football banning orders, preventing them from attending football matches for several years.Banning orders can have a huge impact on these individuals, making sure they are closely monitored by police, which can have a knock-on effect on their friends and those in their social circle."None of these individuals will be allowed to travel to Germany for the World Cup and all will have to surrender their passports to police before the tournament starts."Sentenced at Manchester Crown Court were: l Nicholas Whittle, 44, Brandwood Road, Bacup. Police were called after reports that mourners were hurling objects off a Burnley bridge following the funeral of a former BNP councillor.
Officers arrived at the Yorkshire Street bridge at 9pm on Tuesday after being told around 40 youths were causing a disturbance. The mourners had attended the funeral of Luke Smith, 26, of Brunshaw Road, who was found dead last week, police said. The convicted football hooligan, who was forced to resign as a councillor after continued allegations of violence, was said to have been suffering from psychological problems when he appeared in court earlier this month charged with assault.
Sgt Phil Carter, of Burnley police, said: “Police dispersed the group on Tuesday soon after arriving and no arrests were made.”
It is believed the mourners had been drinking in the Lounge pub, in nearby Higgin Street, following Mr Smith’s funeral. Yesterday a large banner was hung from a bridge in Yorkshire Street with the message “Luke Smith lives forever”.
Speaking last week, Mr Smith’s uncle, Steve Smith, who was the BNP leader in Burnley when his nephew was elected, and is now leader of the far-right England First party, said: “He was a lovely, lovely lad who, like a lot of people, was just too sensitive to exist in what is effectively an extremely cruel world. Things had gone downhill for him.”
Mr Smith was 21 when he was elected as councillor for Lanehead ward, in May 2003. But he was suspended from the BNP less than three months later, after it emerged previous football-related violence had earned him a lifetime ban from Turf Moor, and he was alleged to have been fighting at the party’s Red, White and Blue festival in Sawley in July that year.
In September 2004, after a full investigation by the Standards Board for England, he was banned for three years from becoming a member of any council across the UK.
Earlier in 2004, the former gas engineer had been given a two-and-a-half year football banning order, and he was jailed for 11 months in March 2006, after breaching the order and being involved in football-related violence in Manchester, Blackpool and Burnley. His football banning order was extended to six years.
In his latest court appearance, on July 14, he was charged with assault after an attack on the landlord of the Princess Royal – the pub near where he was found dead.

A criminal stole meat worth more than £200 for a barbecue following the funeral of a former British National Party councillor.
Burnley magistrates heard how Norman "Knuckles" Jones took the £216 haul, including steaks, from the town's Tesco, for a wake after the death of 27-year-old Luke Smith, who was found hanged in Yorkshire Street on July 20th.
Jones (58), who has a long criminal record, admitted theft.
The defendant, of Williams Road, Burnley, was given a three-month curfew between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., but it was lifted on Saturday, so the convicted soccer thug could take his children to the Sheffield Wednesday match. He must also pay £75 costs.
A district judge told Jones if he had wanted to give Mr Smith a good send-off, items from the shelves at Tesco had to be paid for.
Mr Richard Taylor (defending) said Jones had recently been diagnosed with angina. He had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and the property was recovered. The solicitor added: "He is getting too old for this kind of thing and he knows it."
