Launched at the Heathrow Climate Camp, The Student Climate Project was launched with the view to get the wider student body onboard in the fight against Climate Change. It aims not only to get people thinking and caring about climate change and the fundemental threat it poses to us all, but also to encourage people into taking radical action. Amongst key priorities of the group is to move away from the culture of 'do your bit' and 'offset this', with a more positive and inspiring approach of taking collective political action against the root causes.
The Project held its launch gathering in December, and decided that the big project for 2008 would be a Tour of Climate Action. This will see an exciting range of events take place at campuses across the UK during 2008. This next gathering in Leeds will be where we brainstorm and then piece together an ambition plan. By the end of the weekend we intend to have concrete plans for concrete action.
The Tour can include anything we want it to, but is likely to feature arts, street-theatre, actions, fun climatey things, and popular education. We already have working groups putting together ideas, but we need loads more people to make the event successful. All are welcome at Leeds, student or not, to make this Tour amazing.
If you are keen to get involved but can't make Leeds then drop your ideas through to
process@studentclimateproject.org.uk in the coming days, and we will make sure they are heard at the gathering. Also we can put you in touch with a working group, all will be needing lots of help following the gathering. If you are keen for your university to be a stop on the Tour then email
logistics@studentclimateproject.org.uk See you all soon!
