I am reliably informed that after a similar Clown Army Training Weekend held by a radical samba band in Manchester, 2006, one of the participants from Hebden Bridge tried their best to sabotage and destroy the samba band with a "born women only" separatist lesbian feminist agenda...
Good Luck to any body considering attending this event, especially if you do not self-identify as a 1970's era separatist lesbian feminist sambista, as you will definitely need it...

Hello all,

The Clown Army Workshop is intended as an `introduction` - only...........
We hope to run the full training over 2 days in Spring 2008.
We are offering this workshop and further full traing in a spirit of foolery & joy.

This event is open to all.
It isn`t a women only workshop & so what if it was????
Anyone attempting to stop this workshop will be ejected & not welcome.
Come in peace or do`nt come.
We will refuse entry to anyone attempting to

Why are you so obviously threatened by women only space & Lesbians ???
My personnal experience of the Manchester ROR Sambistas (who transfeminists is one) has been
extreme anti Lesbian and anti Feminist and problems with anyone over 30 or not white & middle class. Many women & Lesbians have left that group, (Mancs Rhythms of Resistance)
including me because of this.
I do`nt want to be part of your white middle class homophobic woman hating `revolution`.

Clowns with an open mind are welcome at this workshop.

I personaly find that clown training suddenly makes people (who were previously happily going about their activism) incredibly funny and talented clowns and in no way do they annoy other activists.The ability to adopt a funny voice and wave a feather duster is not only very subversive but outrageously funny.

Hello, all these comments have been brought to my attention by a friend and frankly i do not understand why Rhythms of Resistance is mentioned.

Just to clarify things, Rhythms of Resistance is NOT involved with this workshop. Yes it did host a workshop on Clowing carried out by The Clown Army, a year ago as part of the very successful exhibition on creative activism (including video activism, clowning, music and creative writing) where alot of people attended. Rhythms of Resistance has members of different backgrounds and as long as everyone respects the principles of ROR the individual members' gender, sexual orientation, religion, race or class is irrelevant as our aim is to break down oppression.

Yes two women who defined themselves as feminist-lesbians left the ROR group because they asked for men not to be involved in ROR action. It was suggested that a working group is created to accommodate the 2 people for specific actions but as ROR welcomes all genders it was not appropriate to kick out males or our transgender members because 2 women did not wish to work with other members because of their gender.

Also ROR has members of different backgrounds including race, religion, class, sexuality and age. These differences are not an issue since the principles and activism is our shared aim.

It is sad to see comments by Luscioun "anarchy" as they have no grounds as the group is quite diverse and does reflect in welcoming diversity. The members however have to respect certain core principles like respecting transgenderism which is unfortunatly something that ROR has been attacked by others like Luscious Anarchy i.e. th fact that ROR had/has members who are transgendered/lesbian/bi/heterosexual. ROR will continue to stand up for Gay Rights, Trans Rights and Human Rights something that we ROR has been repetely attacked for by Luscious Anarchy.

However, good luck with the clown workshop and hopefully the energy will be spend on creativity rather than attacking ROR just because it has/had a person who was born male but identified as "queer" .

I was just trying to advertise the Clown Army workshop here on Indymedia
and a disgruntled person (`transfeminist` hahahaha) from Manchester Rhythms of Resistance
whom if it`s who I think it is used this space here to try trash me.
Ho hum online trashing/flaming instead of talking to me face to face.....that`s very brave of you.
Strange as I had never had any probelems with that person, and usually had a laugh with them
and in fact I had supported them around the homophobia they were experiencing the last time
I spent time/workd with them

Rhythms of Resistance Manchester belives the more people joining activities the better. it is you (Luscious) who has brought up ROR in this discussion through your comments, and this surely is irrelevant if as you claim is to purely advertising something that is not even related to ROR.

And as we said before, good luck with the event and hopefully your energy will be used creatively.

The 2 "feminist lesbians" as you refer to them wished for a womens only action. ROR wished to support that by creating a working group within the mixed ROR group to focus on the feminist action, rather than excluding other members altogether from ROR actions. This aimed to empower the feminist lesbians into having the support of the women in ROR (as these feminist lesbians did not want men in that action) but also still involving male ROR members to be in the ROR group. The "femist lesbians" rejected that proposal.

The points of disagreement were that the feminist lesbians wished to:

1) use pornographic material for their campaign against porn. One other lesbian ROR member was uncomfortable with this as she belived it was not appropriate to duplicate what we were ment to be campaigning against.
2) call men rapists (this was found offensive by men and women in the group.)
3) ROR members asked the feminists lesbians to ammend their proposal and consider some slogans that would suit the whole group. The feminist lesbians unfortunately showed no flexibility and said these were the banners and slogans. As a result some ROR members stepped aside as they felt uncomfortable with the slogans

Some ROR members (mixture of heterosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, and "queer") did not feel comfortable being in a campaign that used language like "men are rapists", and as the feminist lebians did not wished to change their slogan, some ROR members stood aside on the matter. Others were debating whether it was appropriate for such slogan to be used as ROR. These were discussed at quite a few meetings. At the same time the queer (self identified queer) member proposed a queer action were ROR members accepted. Unfortunately this was seen as a vendetta, rather than the fact that via consensus decision making proposals have to suit the group and that the original feminist proposal was something some people found offensive NOT because of they were not supportive of lesbians but because of the choice of slogans that were seen as non-factual i.e. are all men rapists?

Its good to have the background to the discussion –but does any of this have anything to do with clowns? (the idea of a clown carrying a sign saying ‘men are rapists’ just seems somewhat bizarre). I suppose I can see the point to illustrate how important it is to have clear aims/objectives and a shared understanding of how issues will be constructed/decided/resolved .

(I personally can’t be arsed with women only events. I find anyone who thinks they were born with a body deluded)

Sorry Ioanna to be rude, but you talk so much shit.
We never approved the slogan 'men are rapists' for use at an anti-rape demo. Men raping women everyday on an international scale is an issue however us feminist lesbians wish to address, not cloud within queer rhetoric cos people can't decide what constitutes woman or man. All the reasons why ROR didn't approve of our proposed actions, where exactly the reasons why we left, cos ROR doesn't consider feminism to be an important issue to address...cos we might upset the men in the group- oh dear... as an activist, there's nothing like waking up and smelling your own privilege to challenge oppression.
The crux is that Ziggy has been criticised here by a transactivist because she puts her energy into female, lesbian activism. ROR with it's queer bias, doesn't see eye to eye with the feminist lesbians over the definition of woman. You do your thing, we do our thing, so lets leave it.

Then if thats your issue why attack ROR? This has nothing to do with ROR!

Yes ROR accepts queers cos gee, somehow it belives in equality where gender, sexuality, race are not an issue of discrimination!

Also, no there's NO bullshit posted by Io (except Ziggy's childlike viscious comments). Everything posted regarding ROR by Io, is what the minutes document(!) which YOU (Charlie) also approved! Ziggy had never joined ROR so not sure where she is getting her info or why she is so angry and posting things about ROR where ROR kept out of all these!

As for the disagreements outlined in the ealier post by Io, these are as i said, from the approved minutes! Also why are you so disapproving if some people within ROR wished to discuss Queer issues too? Or should the group kick out the one self-identified queer who dared to express that although they were not a born-female they considered themselves to be inline with feminist matters ?

What Ziggy decides to spend her time on is up to her. But she cannot dominate who enters and who is a member of ROR and what less rights everyone else but her should be given!

Also, Charlie cannot force a ROR member to hold placards that are non-factual or they do not agree to (i.e degrading images).

Why? cos ROR members are allowed to think and decide for themselves rather than blindly follow Ziggy's or Charlie's orders.

I have never ordered anyone to hold a placard they would disapprove of and my approach to activism is not to 'order' people around.
