Northern Eco-Action gathering 11th November, Bradford

gatherer | 27.10.2006 10:48 | Climate Camp 2006 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield

You are cordially invited to the NORTHERN ECO-ACTION GATHERING taking place on
Saturday 11 November from 10.30-6pm in the BRADFORD RESOURCE CENTRE followed by
food and socialising in the 1 in 12 social centre. For practical details see below and check our website  http://www.eco-action.org/northern/
Please pass this invite on!

WHAT'S THE GATHERING ABOUT?

The world is on the point of ecological collapse: global temperature rise, species extinction, nuclear waste dumping, depletion of natural resources, deforestation, to name just a few problems. These will not be solved by governments (who make it worse by warring for the remaining resources), but by the people and communities working co-operatively..

Come to the gathering if you want to do something about this. It doesnt matter if you are a total novice or an experienced activist. Inaction will result in collective suicide for humankind and the planet.

Workshops and discussions on:

*A round-up of what's going on in different places, who's doing what and ideas for actions

*Sharing skills: getting together a local group/network, legal training, security, strategy

*Planning eco-actions and campaigns in the North

*How we can support each other: networking, working together

The idea for the gathering came out some Northern folks meeting at the Earth First gathering. The aim is make better links between people into taking ecological direct action, share skills and plan new campaigns and actions.

PRACTICAL STUFF
We've now got a confirmed venue, the very nice and fully accessible Bradford Resource Centre, 17-21 Chapel St, BRADFORD, BD1 5DT, a link to a map can be found here:  http://www.brc-net.org.uk

It's only 5 minutes walk from Bradford Interchange. For more detailed travel descriptions check our website nearer the time
 http://www.eco-action.org/northern/

We're having to pay for this venue so we'll be asking everyone to make a donation of £2-10.

Please let us know if you are coming and also if you want to run a workshop or discussion. Some of us will try and cook some vegan food, but it'd be great if everyone could bring some (vegan) nosh to share for lunch and dinner.

After dinner we can head over to the 1 in 12 social centre for a chat and a drink.

If you need a place to stay overnight, then please get in touch as we may be able to sort something out.

See you there!

Eco-Splitters?

If the "aim is make better links between people into taking ecological direct action, share skills and plan new campaigns and actions" why ain't you all going to this?

Leeds/Yorkshire Climate Action group Meeting this Sunday Oct 29th 2pm-4pm

There will be a meeting from 2pm - 4pm this Sunday at The Common Place in Leeds city centre (www.thecommonplace.org.uk) to discuss what a Leeds/Yorkshire group inspired by the Camp for Climate Action can do next and also how we would like to contribute towards another climate camp next year. Anyone with an interest in campaiging on climate change is more than welcome, there's no need to have been at the camp.

Eddie

FFS, sigh, no not splitters - what's your point?

27.10.2006 16:36

I don't know what your point is, or what you are trying to do, Eddie, with your comment?

The Northern Eco-Action gathering has been planned since mid-August, as was mentioned, and leaflets and a website have been out & up since the end of August.

There will be people there meeting up to discuss climate chaos actions AMONGST OTHER campaigns, ideas, and needs of local groups, and it's people from across the whole Northern England region.

I hope you and others from the Yorkshire area, who go this Sunday to the meeting in Leeds, or who are unable to, will also come and share your ideas at the Northern Eco-Action gathering. Maybe everyone in Yorkshire who's going to the gathering is already also planning on coming this Sunday to the meeting you mention. Then we'll all be working together, and no-one will be eco-splitting, or whatever you were on about!

See you there.

Re Splitters?

Sounds good to me - they don't necessarily know you have these meetings in which case you've just made contact :) I'm sure there is room for both anyway - communication does seem to be worse in the age of email and websites - where if people aren't on a list they do may not know what's going on.

Much time spent on 'practical physical' stuff e.g. turning up for an action on time, speaking face to face to the people you wish to commmunicate your message to ( more effective? ) :) can end up mainly in the virtual. On the other hand reportage can be increased and this can be empowering getting a message out , though again this can be traded off iwhen you realise the deluge of e-information ( dicuss the growth of importance of the visual apspect of some forms of action. How many Indymedia stories do you follow in the newswire and what dictates that? involvement at what level/).

We have that dilema of centralisation and ease of mass organisation vs independent localised direct action ( not a straight binary distinction ) e.g old 'action' groups that became centralised fund raisers which can disempower at the local / regional level.

On a practical level, these events can be chance to meet more occasionally and discuss practical projects you have been spending your time on e.g. community allotments/guerilla gardening which in the case of keeping regularly ( e.g. daily ) maintained would not be practical except on a local level i.e it's unlikely you would keep a gardening project going on in Leeds if you lived in Bradford, however the chance to occasionaly meet up at an, for instance,Yorkshire meeting and skill share, empathise, and plan different styles of workable action ( perhaps mass or one needing a greater amount of people than you usually are able to work with ).

Oh dear - How long have I spent writing this? Have fun.
