This summer saw ecological action take centre stage in the country's media for a brief moment, as hundreds of campaigners converged in Selby to camp in the shadow of Drax power station, largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the UK. Groups and individuals from across the UK and beyond defied mass police presence and a legal injunction to make their presence felt outside (and, for some, inside) a target which for many represents the failings of the current system of energy production.
Largely ignored by the press were the energetic discussions held throughout the camp on practical ways forward for ecological action. While mass, visible actions such as those taken during the camp serve to raise the profile of the problems facing our planet, concrete change is only possible through sustained, ongoing action of a diverse nature.
For this reason, a group of climate camp participants based in York invites you to an open meeting at the Friends Meeting House, Friargate. The purpose of this meeting is firstly, to discuss the camp for climate action, its consequences, influence and experience; and secondly, to discuss ways forward for environmental action in and around the York area. With the threat of an incinerator on the horizon, increased housing development, rising air pollution and areas of Yorkshire at risk of flooding, ecological issues are human issues that cannot be ignored. This meeting is open to any and all, from experienced activists to the simply curious.
