Residents Against Greenbelt Exploitation (Fairburn, Yorks)

Percy Peacock | 31.08.2006 11:15 | Climate Camp 2006 | Climate Chaos | Ecology

We are three local villages of Ledstion, Ledsham and Fairburn and we are fighting greenbelt exploitation in our area with regard to a proposed opencast mine.

The projected opencast is still in the hands of local authority (Leeds Council) and if permission is granted will commence September 2007.

Over one million tons of coal is due to be extracted along with other minerals.

The site is adjacent to the RSPB bird sanctuary at Fairburn Ings and is a designated site of special scientific and historical interest and outstanding natural beauty.

The coal is to be used at Drax, Eggborough and Ferrybridge power stations. Five years is what it will take, all this for only 14 days coal to keep the above mentioned power stations going.

I would like to comment that the information contained on your home page is inaccurate and therefore misleadaing.

The proposal is not in the hands of Leeds Council as i understand that no planning application has been submitted.

The proposal will extract a MAXIMUM of one million tonnes not OVER one million tonnes.

The coal willl not take 14 days to burn it will be at least two months. This really isn't a valid argument against the proposal, what does it matter how long it takes to burn? shall we just keep importing gas and coal to drive up energy prices? The fact is people have to accept that we need to get our energy resources from somewhere, unfortunately coal can only be worked where it found so communities have to deal with this fact.

Whats the betting that you would all object to a wind farm or nuclear plant nearby as well? no coal? no nuclear? and no wind energy means that you won't be able to turn on the computer to read this message!

If you know this area you will know the potential impact of this action could be devastating and change the face of the location for ever.

This is not a case of numbyism this is a serious objection to what is seen to be an unneccessary intrusion on a wildlife reserve. I for one would have no objection to a wind turbine or other forn of renewable enery source I cannot however support this course of action
