Ten years after the judicial murder of human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa shocked the world, the communities of the Niger Delta in Nigeria continue to bear the burden of our demand for oil with escalating violence and environmental deterioration.
REFINING MEMORY - 30 MIN FILM
Short film made by Judy Price and Andrew Conio in 2005 as part of the Remember Saro-Wiwa project exploring issues around oil exlpoitation in the Niger Delta and the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa.
Among the speakers will be:
JACK MAPANJE - Internationally renowned poet formerly imprisoned without charge and exiled from Malawi. Jack will read from his numerous, humorous & harrowing collection of poetry.
KEN WIWA - journalist, author and director of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Foundation. Ken’s letters to his father are featured in 'A Month and A Day & Letters' (Ayebia Publishing).
JAMES MARRIOTT - co-author of 'The Next Gulf: London, Washington and Oil Conflict in Nigeria'. and co-director of award winning social and environmental justice group PLATFORM.
KADIJA SESAY - co-editor of 'Dance the Guns to Silence'; Gen. Sec. of African Writers Abroad (PEN) Centre.
SIMON MURRAY - 'Pomfretian' writer, poet, former adman & sometime Common Place open-mic performer.
