“If you go to a demonstration and then go home, that’s something. But the people in power can live with that. What they can’t live with is sustained pressure that keeps on building, groups that keep on doing things, people that learn from the last time and do it better next time...”
This July, the G8 — the heads of state of the world’s most powerful countries — will be meeting in Gleneagles, Scotland. Whilst Blair’s government talks of tackling climate change, it’s imposing a huge new road-building programme, and massive airport expansions. While G8 leaders talk of relieving poverty in the global south, they uphold a financial system that creates global famine, military repression and social and environmental breakdown.
Tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of people will converge on Scotland to resist the G8 and the world it represents. There are plans for blockading the summit, actions on climate change, inspiring convergence spaces to meet, eat and sleep, and more...
Here in Leeds many of us have joined dozens of other grassroots autonomous groups to create the Dissent! anti-capitalist network. One of the projects of this network has been The Common Place social centre, another is on Saturday 14 May when we’re holding an open day to galvanise radical resistance to the G8 Summit here in Leeds. It’s a chance to meet people, learn skills, share information, plan, party, and get inspired about protests around the Summit.
