Blair in Manchester: Urgent

LB | 30.01.2005 09:17 | Anti-racism | Globalisation | Social Struggles

I have just found out from an inside source that Tony Blair will be in Manchester in MONDAY AFTERNOON to open the Wythenshawe Forum.

Only a handful of employees know about this so security will be tight.

Come along from about 12 o'clock to protest about Blair's warmongering, his party's racism, climate change, fox-hunting... whatever, just be there to oppose him!

LB

fox hunting?

30.01.2005 12:34

War, Racism, Environmental issues, YES. Why encourage pro hunting protests?

manc

. . . . because

30.01.2005 17:37

could it be because the only truly effective campaign in the UK which is fighting in a co-ordinated way against the Blair government is the Countryside Alliance ?

Yes, they marched into London and got brutalised by the cops. Really effective. Next they'll be voted in as the opposition.

LB

Oh dear

31.01.2005 16:30

Blair is anti fox hunting

What do you want him to do about climate change?

Bobby

climate change

31.01.2005 20:38

I'd like him to set himself in concrete on the islands of Tuvalu, and as they go under water due to our lifestyles, I think he'd think of a few things before he drowned...

concreter

controversial

01.02.2005 09:15

anti-fox hunting.. ha!

you bunch of fickle sods, i dont see anything like this kind of demonisation towards say... meateaters, or slaughter houses, or shell.

while the majority of the country are tucking into their dinner, watching the news about fox hunting saying
"oh thats so wrong, fox hunting should be stopped, those poor foxes.MMMMMM this chicken is nice, honey"

bunch of hypocrits.

and yeah it SEEMS like a great idea, to stop fox hunting but just cause TONY BLAIR says it should be banned doesnt mean we have the right to say what another culture can do.

if this happens you better grab your pants, cause you will be next on this removal of freedoms, rights and cultural practices.

btw i am a vegan and this issue of fox hunting has nothing to do with cruelty to animals.. its about your culture stopping another cultures' practices.. and before you know it.. your practices will be banned by another group.

(btw how did the meeting with anthony go?)

Anti-Blair protest

01.02.2005 10:00

I think the idea was to get as many activists down there as possible. It was an opportunity for people to try to make their voice heard and to show Blair we are opposed to what he is doing - in Iraq, on civil liberties, on poverty, on deportations, on ASBOs, on animal rights, on the arms industry, transport and the enviroment. Any and all the issues which are highlighted here on Indymedia.

Hope we get a report on what happened. Or if everyone was too busy picking holes in the call to action to actually get down there.

John

Zarc you fool....

01.02.2005 13:33

Banning fox hunting is not about controlling someone elses "culture". Its fucking wrong, and so what if someone claims its part of their so called "culture"?

Homophobic west indian people often claim gay-bashing is part of preserving their heterosexual "culture" and young girls often see domestic abuse as acceptable because its part of their supposed "culture".

Just because a group of people has a long tradition doesnt mean that tradition is automatically sacred and untouchable.

Zarc and the age-old problem

01.02.2005 16:13

Sadly Zarc's confused lecturing about the "culture" of foxhunting merely underlines how flaky people get when they are denied a regular protein intake.

Get a steak down you, you useless bloody HIPPY.

PS - As for his/her accusation that "nobody" on IMC has a go at factory farming or the likes of Shell - Yeah, right.

Bloody Vegans. I wish I could feed them all to a giant Venus Fly Trap.

Carnivorous vegetables! Yeah baby!

no demo?

01.02.2005 18:49

I'm sorry I even mentioned fox hunting, John you're dead right. Were there any demos today? Did Manchester Stop the War or Manchester CND or the Manchester Social Forum (if it's still going?) or DoSummit etc do anything????? I've not heard anything! A real shame, especially as we had prior knowledge which is unusual. It's a real pity that a small group of middle aged middle class unrepresentative men (Father's 4 Justice) are more active and get more attention than the suppossed 'Movement of Movements'

manc

actually yr right

01.02.2005 23:19

i don't really know what anyone could have done except chucked bricks at him but still the lack of response from cnd, manchester social forum, stw, etc is fairly typical of the way things are in manchester at the moment. maybe the best thing to do would have been to get some people together and gone down there yourself (obviously with a bit of thought, like how not to get nicked) stw is totally down to the nub in manchester and the other organisations that can quote membership figures, when it comes down to it the people who turn up to do stuff are just mostly people who know each other and sometimes do things together.

i'd suggest next time, sort something out yourself with your mates like what you want to do and then tell the "organisations" whats going on and where. make it sound good. then some people might turn up. don't expect them to take the lead on it cause most of the time they won't

the manchester activist scene has become very fragmented. but maybe thats a good reason for deciding what you what to do when blair comes to town again and then do it whilst pushing the various organisations to get up off their arses.

i was at work, sorry

activism is dead, long live apathy

15.02.2005 23:17

talking of the social forum, they're holding another Manchester Peoples Assembly on Sat April 16th at 10pm at Friends Meeting House and hope to get lots of stalls & workshops...
but can somebody enlighten me to who's actually active in the Social Forum & who's likely to
turn up...

and continuing the rant about the semi-dormant campaign/activist scene in Manc, how come nobody's doing a critique of the Council's claim to aim to be the 'greenest in the land' whilst refusing to do an initial eco-survey of their activities, refusing to draw up a plan or target or aims or timetable, and producing strategies that commit to what they promised they'd already commited to over 10 years ago? (see  http://www.networkingnewsletter.org.uk/57/gauntlet.html for santized coverage!)
