Stop the Nazis in Heckmondwike

Call to anti-racists and anti-Nazis in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

The British Nazi Party (BNP) are going full out to try and take Heckmondwike (near Dewsbury) in a by election due to be held on August 14th 2003. Kirklees United Against Racism and Fascism are planning to stop them, and other anti-racists and anti-fascists owe them our support. They are going twice weekly leafletting on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays from now till the election and if you live locally or are free to help then please reply to this email or contact them at

Dewesbury: thats where there was a riot in the early 1990's as the ANL et al parachuted in to the estate and attempted to slap despised, deprived workers in the face for daring to have a BNP person standing...the predictable result was: dirt poor workers felt shat on by the middle class Left (there were even some SWPies, white ones with plum accents and dreadlocks for gods sake!)& reponsed with an elemental fury...which allowed the BNP to pose as the radical alternative rather than as more of the same...
Swamping an area with m/c outsiders is not a good move..nor is seeing ALL workers who vote for BNP as 'scum' (comment of ANL Furher Julie Waterstone)...
Rather than herding workers in the hands of the BNP why not try TALKING to them? Try campaigning on issues which whilst not exotic enough to largely middle class PC activists ARE important to workers...a lot of BNP voters vote out of despair..ive known BNP voters to be horrified at the thought that people would see 'em as 'racist'..

Sorry if I have misrepresented what you are saying but when local people are risking confrontation with organised fascists to go round their area in order to argue with people and give them leaflets exposing what sort of organisation the BNP is, I think they deserve any extra support they can get.

Of course a 'Dont vote Nazi' style campaign is limited in what it can do to tackle the underlying causes of why people might vote BNP (poverty, poor housing etc. etc.) but if it helps to stop them getting another councillor, what exactly is your problem?

The have Mixenden now its Heckmondwike. Perhaps it will be where I live next. So im going to make every effort to stop them now. Any one who doesent fit with there ideologey will suffer.

Gurdeep, seriously; even if we were to buy your line that the SWP and MAB are fascist organisations, don't you still think the BNP are a much more serious threat? Think about potential audiences/supporters; roughly a million Muslims against upward of fifty million who'd call themselves white/Christian?

Now i am told i am BNP supporter? Where as the truth is that on these pages i have been told sikhs are not oppressed: the new holocaust deniers are right here...i am against the bnp & against those in muslim association many of whom attacked sikh in london colleges in 1997 and many since then

Without putting words into Gurdeep's mouth,(who seems MORE than capable of standing up for him/her self) the point "awake" is missing isn't that the BNP's a bigger *threat* than the SWP/MAB P&JA carve up. We're not dealing with simple binaries here!

The point is that said mess will divide the left, alienate most of the non-Muslim working class and potentially drive still more alienated, disenfranchised people into the fascists' sweaty armpits. That's why we, um don't like it very much!

The Stop the BNP campaign in Heckmondwike is far from being controlled by 'plumb-gobbed, dreadlocked middle-class types' as one comment read.

We are local people who are askng for help and solidarity from the wider movement throughout West Yorks - even 'plumb-gobbed socialists' - all comers welcome to help us stop these nutter in our town.

Instead of arguing abstractly against the BNP, local anti-fascists should organise to campaign on local concerns of working class residents. Local people want a voice, control in their communities, otherwise they will be driven to desperate measures, including voting for the fash.

I have looked at this site for a number of weeks now and have read the comments left. I note that both pro and anti BNP comments have been left.

Today I note that your web master has removed ALL the pro BNP comments. So much for freedom of speech on your site. Thank God we still live in a democracy and you people will never get power.

I'm pretty ashamed of some of the racist people of West Yorkshire but it's good to hear some people are going against the anti asian sentiment in our area.
