Monday 28th April saw the official start of the Home Office's policy of Involuntary return for failed asylum-seekers to Afghanistan, with at least 20 Afghans forcibly deported to Kabul.
As news coverage of recent events has shown, the situation in Afghanistan is far from stable. Even in Kabul, the authorities are unable to guarantee the physical safety and human rights of all citizens.
This policy ignores the advice of the UNHCR and respectable NGOs such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Oxfam that are actually operating within Afghanistan, as well as that of the Afghan authorities themselves. It also undermines Britain's commitments under international and EU law to safeguard human rights, and is generating fear and insecurity amongst Britain's Afghan community.
