We also still have Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) down the road near Newmarket, whom have been propped up financially by the government since all their overseas shareholders pulled out several years ago, after a sustained international campaign against them by Animal Rights activists.
Despite significant advances in testing and imaging technology over the last few years, there is still an entrenched world view within the scientific community (especially among pharmaceuticals companies) that testing on animals is 'necessary', even though there have been numerous occasions where drugs have been released into the market after extensive animal testing, only to wreak havoc in the Human population.
At 3:00am on Saturday morning, candles were lit in memory of Pat, who passed away at the age of 75 last year.

I just wanted to clarify that Animal Aid is a national campaign group. Animal Aid Cambridge was a local contact group for that national group many years ago but is now known as Animal Rights Cambridge. Pat was a co-founder of the Cambridge group and the Cambridge contact for Animal Aid.
We are calling for an end to animal experiments at Cambridge University, Addenbrookes, Huntingdon Life Sciences and at Babraham. In the lab animals are isolated, starved, burned, blinded, poisoned and irradiated. The laboratory is a sterile, non-stimulating environment that prevents animals from displaying natural behaviours – if this was happening outside of a lab it would be considered illegal animal cruelty.
Pat was particularly interested in campaigning against the animal research conducted at the University of Cambridge. We are calling on the University and all animal researchers in Cambridge to end the use of these cruel, unnecessary and misleading 'animal model' tests and to use the funds saved for modern, human relevant research instead.
The group wish to remember Pat's life in this action. Pat was committed, caring and always there when the animals needed her. Pat was the sort of person that was, and remains, an inspiration to us all in her compassionate out look and dedication to the cause.

It is time we abolished this form of slavery and became a lot more civilised ourselves as a species.
It is also time we stopped believing that the rest of the planet and the other species upon it are there for us to exploit as we see fit for our own personal gain. In fact it is precisely this deluded superior attitude which causes much of the ecological mess we create in the first place.
This is NOT a lesson we should be teaching our children, and I hope that should more enlightened times come, Animal Rights activists will be seen in the same light as Civil Rights activists, as they have much in common in form and spirit.
However, this will not happen while we have billion dollar Cattle Ranches destroying Rainforests.
