McLibel Anniversary Protest:
Sunday 21st June 09'
Meet 12 noon, McDonalds Rose Crescent Cambridge.
All welcome!

Why?
Victory #1: In 1997 activists won the now famous McLibel victory after the company sued 2 campaigners for handing out leaflets about the company's controversial corporate practices. The Court found that McDonald's marketing has "pretended to a positive nutritional benefit which their food did not match"; that they "exploit children"; are "culpably responsible for animal cruelty" and "pay low wages".

Victory #2: This year in a much smaller local case, an activist was cleared after a walk in protest at McDonalds for the 2008 anniversary of the McLibel case. Police arrested the activist under the Public Order Act. But the court found that the campaigner did not break the criminal law and was exercising freedom of speech. A small McVictory for protest!

Arrest the real culprits

On appeal the court added that it was fair comment that their employees worldwide "do badly in terms of pay and conditions", and true that "if one eats enough McDonald's food" this may well lead to "the very real risk of heart disease."

Then in February 2005 the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg declared that the notorious McLibel case was in breach of the right to a fair trial and right to freedom of expression, thereby voiding any solace that McNasty may have enjoyed from the trial.

The Court ruled that UK laws had failed to protect the public’s right to criticise massive corporations whose business practices can affect people’s lives, health and the environment.

So, after spending £10million to suppress free speach, McDonalds find that the most widely distributed protest leaflet ever, continues to be distributed worldwide...

Good luck with your demo!

... and in London regular demos are held once or twice monthly to protest about McDonalds exploitation of animals, people and the enviroment. Animal farming produces 18% of global greenhouse gases and as McDonald's is the world largest user of beef, they contribute significantly to this total. The animals used in McDonalds burgers have little choice in their brutal deaths - help us educate the public that they have a choice in what they consume and where they consume.
