Following an article in the Cambridge Evening News regarding peoples concerns about the promotion of the meat from the Midsummer Common cows at Waller & Sons butchers, local animal rights campaigners protested to ask concerned people to have compassion for all animals and switch to a plant based diet.

According to Animal Rights Cambridge "It is upsetting, we agree, but then so is killing any farmed animal just for our taste buds. If people are truly offended about this it's time for them to give up eating animals."

The campaigners are calling for people to try out a vegetarian diet. "Even if it's only for a week. Give it a go! There are fantastic veggie options available these days, it's just about finding what's right for you."

The protesters also point out the environmental argument for leaving animal products off your plates. "The UN is now saying that animal agriculture causes more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world put together! If we want to save the planet going veggie is an excellent start!" "The threat from animal agriculture must be a key environmental issue no two ways about it."

-Animal Rights Cambridge meets on the fourth Monday of every month at the Bath House, Gywdir Street (off Mill Road) 8 p.m., £1 hall hire per person. For more on Animal Rights Cambridge  http://animalrightscambridge.bravehost.com

Those greenhouse gasses don't necessarily come from burning oil though. If an animal is releasing methane then it comes from carbon that the animal has first had to take from the environment.

It also ignores the fact that animals can take plant matter that would otherwise be inedible to humans and turn it into meat that can be consumed and hence makes that crop more efficient. Plus, they can keep that meat fresh without the need for refrigeration.

You cannot directly compare livestock and motor vehicles on raw emission totals alone and expect to find any meaningful conclusions. It sounds as if the aim here is turning people veggie and someone's trying to use climate guilt to achieve that.

MonkeyBot 5000 should get his facts straight before he posts a comment. Judging from his comment, he knows nothing about the reality of the situation.

Monkeybot, don't forget the cereals grown in impoverished countries and transported across the world to feed these animals during winter (to ensure constant flow of milk and fat bodies). I once saw a really massive pile of carrots at a farm. Turns out it was not for people but for the cows kept indoors. The energy, fertilisers, hormones, anti-biotics, land, and water used to keep the cows is ridiculous when we can eat those carrots directly and use the land more efficiently and with less/no chemicals.
