Hands Off Iraqi Oil Day of Action

Denise Knowelden | 21.02.2008 13:02 | Cambridge

Saturday 23rd February 2008

Plans for the action in Cambridge are as follows:

Meet at 11am at the roundabout at the end of Fen Causeway opposite the Shell Station. We will leaflet and petition there and then walk into the Market Square to do some readings, talks, more leafletting and petitioning.

The theme of the demo is 'Corporate Robbers' so people can dress up in stripey tops with bags of swag or as city gents or whatever grabs attention. Bring music, balloons, banners and placards.

Many people are still unaware of the role of Big Oil, and their corporate friends in Halliburton and Bechtel, in the initial invasion and plans for the carve up of Iraq's energy resources. Over the last 5 years, the oil workers' federations have remained united against the occupation, maintaining oil supplies and defending their members rights across sectarian divides in opposition to The Oil Law. They need our support to call our government to account.

The Oil Law is what lays behind the lack of an exit strategy. Come and join the action on Saturday calling for Hands Off Iraqi Oil and End the Occupation Now.

The protest in Cambridge is part of an International day of action taking place in:
UK - Bangor, Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, Hastings, Halifax, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Norwich, St Andrews.
USA - Washington DC and Dallas, Texas.

Hands Off Iraqi Oil is a UK coalition opposing any foreign exploitation of Iraq?s oil reserves that rips off the Iraqi people. Members include Corporate Watch, Iraq Occupation Focus, Jubilee Iraq, PLATFORM, Voices UK and War on Want, and is supported by Stop the War Coalition.
