Midsummer House – News Coverage and Demo Report

ARA | 18.02.2008 21:15 | Animal Liberation | Cambridge | World

Newspaper coverage and demo report for Midsummer House Foie Gras demos in Cambridge.

On Saturday campaigners were again outside Midsummer House for their regular lunchtime demo. The campaigners were glad to learn that the Cambridge Evening News had covered their Valentines Day demo. The report explained that the campaigners held placards stating ‘Foie Gras = Diseased Liver’ among other statements. The quote from the Midsummer House manager did not seek to justify the Foie Gras production, instead talking about ‘freedom of choice’ and the like. Unfortunately the animals don’t get this choice!

Midsummer House sells Foie Gras a controversial product that many businesses including the major supermarkets have banned. Foie Gras is commonly produced by shoving a pipe down the throat of a duck or goose. This process causes the animal’s liver to swell painfully and many birds die even before getting to slaughter. The process is considered so unethical that it is illegal in the UK and therefore Foie Gras is imported from countries with lower animal welfare standards in this regard.

Many people signed the petition including customers of the business. Of course, the real way to support the campaign is to boycott Midsummer House, not sign the petition but still fund Midsummer House! However ‘every little helps’ as they say.

Unusually the police came at the beginning of the demo and then left. Some police came back later claiming that they had received reports that we had said something that we had not. They began to try and implement a Section 14 but decided not to after being informed that campaigners didn’t say what had been claimed. A supportive member of the public even intervened in support of the protesters.

If you would like to support the campaign please come on one of our weekly demos every Saturday (unless campaign site states otherwise) at 12 noon Midsummer House, Midsummer Common Cambridge.
