hile we welcome the positive aspects of the latest Government
statement and circular, especially the emphasis on the need to
provide alternatives for families facing eviction, we are dismayed
by the heading and tone of the news item below.

NEW GUIDANCE TO HELP COUNCILS REMOVE GYPSY SITES

The government yesterday issued guidance to rid communities of
unauthorised Gypsy and traveller sites.

The ODPM said it would strengthen enforcement powers and address the
shortage of authorised sites.

The department will establish a new task group on enforcement involving
the police and local government.

Planning minister Yvette Cooper said: "Stronger enforcement and more
appropriate sites have to go hand in hand if we are to find a long term
solution to the problems some communities face."

The government admitted the success of new temporary stop notices
introduced in March 2005 had been patchy.

Some authorities, such as North West Leicestershire District Council,
have successfully used the notices, but others have not.

The task group will examine the difficulties some local agencies face.

The government will also consult on giving stronger and swifter planning
enforcement powers to local authorities who have identified alternative
provision.

Further guidance will be published later this year, covering enforcement
where Gypsies and travellers develop their own land without planning
permission.

PETITION AGAINST ETHNIC CLEANSING

To be presented to Basildon Council on Roma Nation Day
8 April, 2006.

We, the undersigned, condemn all acts of ethnic-cleansing
and forceful removal being perpetuated against Roma and
Travellers.

But in particular we wish to draw attention
to the courageous stand being made by the residents of
Dale Farm who, despite a vote by Basildon Council to destroy
their homes, continue in the name of Travellers everywhere,
their non-violent campaign to save their community
from the bulldozer.

We call for common sense, reason and tolerance: leave Dale Farm alone.

Why?

05.02.2006 17:04

Why should I or anybody put any effort into supporting a people who want the best of both worlds. They want to be part of society when it suits them, and get houses, dole, housing and council benefits and other privilges, and at the same time claim they have the right to leave council housing and travel all the country setting up where they please without any consideration for the rights of others. And if anybody complains they cite the human rights act.
I have absolutely no sympathy for the rights of the traveller. I have more sympathy for the rights of the children who because of the irresponsibily of selffish parents will have them living like nomads with poor health and hygiene instead of enjoying the benefits of society.
I wouldn't lift a finger for a traveller.

Typical...

Typical ignorant, uninformed comment from someone above!
Still at least you used a suitable name to sum yourself up.

Do you Troll along here often..?

Nothing is going to change or progress while you believe in stereotypes which perpetuate ignorance and therefore justify further injustices against those who happen to live differently from everyone else.

After all, this is exactly how the ruling classes keep us all under their thumbs, by allowing people to believe in stereotypes and disinformation, and therefore we all continue squabbling amongst ourselves.

It's called divide and rule.

It's also one of the reasons why 'education' systems are slowly but surely being privatised (Student Loan? Tuition Fees? PFI Zone?) and dumbed down - to price out the majority of the population.
Keep 'em dumb, and they'll blame the 'Gyppos' for the world's social ills, rather than the REAL culprits - the ruling class!

Get Real

Well, well, well

I can't afford to get on the property ladder and I work full time and have done since leaving school, so maybe I should buy some land build a big house on it without planning permission then move everybody else I know (who cant afford a house) on to the land and hmm lets see how about every stray dog and horse in the neighbourhood.

The problem with gypsies is they abide by no rules but their own and whilst they continue to do so they will never be accepted. Ever.

Maybe I am wrong and not all gypsies are druken violent people, maybe they all own legitimate businesses and dont rip off and intimidate everyone they meet.

Maybe they dont all send their 16 year old pregnant children out on the streets to sell monopoly pieces, and maybe they dont all act with total disregard for everyone but their kin.

Predjusticed it may seem but it is the truth that the only gypsies I have ever seen have been like I described.

I have lost count of the number of occasions I have seen these people drunk and beating on every passerby they see, thats if they are not too busy beating their child-like "wives" or demanding to be served first in a chip shop only then to spit in the face of the poor teenager serving them.

I will be quite happy to change my attitude towards the Romanies as soon as I meet a decent one.

And yes I know they will all be saying "dont tar us with the same brush", but I have met around 27 of them at different stages through work and horse shows etc and they have all been the same. I tried to look on each one with open eyes and was dissapointed every time.

Their complete disregard of others and the laws of the land in which they live will always make them hated and despised. They can't have everything their own way.

What is wrong with that?

24.08.2007 13:30

The article is aimed at planning officers in local authorities. Surely ridding a community of illegal development is what their job involves? There is no use having planning rules if people think they can just break them. Imagine the outcry if Tesco built a store without planning permission!

I think you are being a little touchy, here, to be honest.
